Storm Fried PC?

Thread Starter
I built a friend a system that is almost the same as mine except he has a 5850.Anyway stormed real hard yesterday afternoon and when he came home his pc was off.Well it has a blue light on for standby instead of green. It also has a yellow light on up by the 24 pin power. The board has an EVGA logo in the middle that glow's red,it beat's like a heart but isn't beating.I won't be able to go over there for a few day's and thought I would try to get some suggestion's before I do.I would think either the mobo or PSU is the problem.I know there is a lot of thing's that could of happened but has anyone had a storm fry out a certain piece?

I've had the power supplies in many monitors fry from surges during storms. I see a lot of PSUs go from power surging on/off here at work too, so that's what I'd look at first.

i work in as a computer technician, and i see atleast 3 computers after every big storm in my area. 99 times outta 100, if the storm takes out one component ( psu ), then the mother board goes as well, and if not gone, then not correctly functional. Every once and a while, ill see just the mb and not the power supply, but on those, usually the nic goes as well. Hope this is helpful....

if the mobo has a light on it its not going to be the psu. more than likely its the mobo. if that has light either its partly damaged or something else. cpu g-card etc. with a bit of luck you will just need to reset the bios i would try that first

the PSU could still be the problem. I've had some that will allow the standby lights to turn on, but cut out as soon as you try and boot the system.

I disagree, it can very well be the PSU. Perhaps one of the low voltage rails is somewhat intact, enough to drive an LED, but to power an entire system, I wouldn't chance it. If you have a PSU tester, bring it. If you don't, hope he has decent home owners insurance. In my experience, even behind a surge protector, we've lost PSU's, Mobo's, chips, Home Theater equipment, washer/dryer...these things happen. Good Luck.

^^ ryboto beat me to it. ^^
