AMD 965 overclock question????

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
Hello great people of OCN!

I have been going round and round to get my CPU & MEMORY combination stable. Finally i have made it to the mountain top and got everything overclocked and stable @4.07Mhz!

My concern is, i have a 965 C3. i have my voltage set at 1.50v, is that to much volts for that version CPU or should i be o.k.?

Thanks.

your perfectly fine within limits..where is your temps at on full load? make sure it doesnt go over 55c. max is 1.55v.

work on the northbridge...see if you can get the cpu-nb to 2600 or 2800.

hey, do you mind letting me know how you were able to configure you're memory to be stable at 4ghz. I have the same memory and have yet to get 4ghz stable. Also, what is your NB running at?

O.k. bro, this is what OCZ sent me for our memory:

These settings if you are trying to at 1600mhz.

Set Memory Clock to {Manual} and {X8.00}
Set System Voltage Control to {Manual}
Set DRAM Voltage Control to {1.65 volts}
Set CPU NB VID Control to {1.35 volts}
Set DCTs Mode to {Unganged}
Set DDR3 Timing Items to {Manual}
Set Memory Timings to 8-8-8-24 (CL-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)
Set 1T / 2T Command Timing to {2T}

Now to get 4.0ghz stable. i followed these instructions to get me started (before) i overclocked the CPU. from what i figure out you can't run 1600 overclocked at 8ghz of ram. reading other post made here i found out you can get better performance at 1333 with tighter timings than 1600.

i kept the memory settings the same except i'd turned down the the memory clock at 6.66 @ 1333, and change the timing to 7-7-7-22 @ (2t) (don't try 1T because it is to hard to try to stabilize). Once i got the memory chip stable at 1600mhz then i knew anything under that shouldn't be a problem. i split the difference between 1333 & 1600 which equals 267mhz i divide that number by 2 which equals 133. i took that number and added it to 1333 which equals 1466mhz, thats my over overclock start point for the memory. then i'd work the rest out as noted below. i used prime95 on the second torture test (the test with the balance of CPU & memory) for about 2 hour. i'm gonna do the last torture test the heavy one tonight. i'll let you know how that went.

Here is the balance i came up with on how i got 4.0ghz stable with my board:

CPU MUlti: x18.5 @ 4.070ghz
NB Freq: x11 @ 2640mhz
Ref. Clk.: 220
HT: x9 @ 1980
8 Gigs (all four slots used) 4 x 2gig
Dram Config: 1466mhz @ x6.66: 7-7-7-22 2t @1.65v
NB voltage: 1.2v
CPU/NB Voltage: 1.35v
CPU voltage: 1.50v

Edit: i see that you have only 4ghz of ram you should not have stability issue. i did cause i am running 8ghz of ram. also, i think you can run your command timing at (1t) sense you are running 4ghz.

i hope this helps you out. let me know or PM.

Yeah so far I'm only using the multiplier to OC the CPU. I'm currently at 3.8 (200x19) v1.45, ram is set to 1600Mhz (8-8-8-24-2t), NB at 2.8 and HT at 2ghz. Even when I drop my memory down to 1333mhz and NB back to 2ghz, and up the multi to 20 (4Ghz, and vcore as high as 1.55) and I'm still not stable. I'm starting to think I should play around with the FSB and lower the CPU multi.

You are right, i was at the same level you are on about a month ago, but theres no stability with just changing the multiplier. to get the stable performance have to play with everything to make a balance, then you should have stability. the only thing to know is the HT is not thats hard to set just remember to keep your HT around 2000. a little higher or a little lower is not a problem you don't want to go to high, just stay around 2000 if can. To high you can lose performance. tweaking just the multiplier isn't quite enough.

Have Fun tweaking.

That's pretty much what it's going to come down too. Thanks for the insight on the memory though, +repped
