6.25v on supposedly 5v cell phone charger.

I need a portable charger for my Cowon D2, and it usually charges via USB port. With my superior abilities, I hacked the end off an old cellphone charger rated 5v 350mA, and replaced it with a female USB port. I plugged it into my D2, and it happily brought up the charging screen. I unplugged it, and checked the voltage: 6.25v. Now, I can do basic math, and know that's 1.25v too much, and I know USB spec has a strict limit of 250mV variation. All I want to know is if it's safe to use with my D2 for 5 hour durations?

Phone chargers are unregulated power supplies.... they don't provide the exact voltage and the voltage actually changes depending on load.

The USB power spec is design to ensure ATX compatability (+5 must be within +/-5%). This is important for devices like hard drives.

What matters in your case is if your Cowon D2 can handle the variation. Most consumer electronics like phones are can since they also have to run off a battery where voltage can vary as well.
