Help! My Motherboard sucks at overclocking

Thread Starter
either that or Im doing something very wrong. Recently I bought an Asus M4A88T-M to fit into my SFF case, the Thermaltake Lanbox. Chipset is 880G with 710 Southbridge. Tried overclocking to 3.6Ghz at 1.4v. When I boot into windows voltage are ALL OVER THE PLACE. Cpu-z reads 1.5-1.42. The motherboard has LLC. Tried using it and it made voltage fluctuation worse. What do you guys suggest I do? Should I leave the multiplier and up the core clock instead? The northbridge is fine at 2600Mhz and 1.3v

hmm... idk it could be the voltage sensors on your board are bad, or it could be that the board just sucks at overclocking. I mean, 880G motherboards aren't designed for that kind of stuff. As long as its Prime95 stable and the temps stay below 62C I'd say keep increasing the multiplier bit by bit. I wouldn't expect the 880G board to do as well as your M4A79XTD though.

Hmm i guess youre right. Also when its unstable the multiplier also fluctuates when im in windows . Cpuz occasionaly reads the multiplier to be 800mhw at 1.1v lol. My M4A79XTD evo did the same but at 4.0GHZ

Yeah that sounds like AMD Cool & Quiet throttling down frequency and voltage to save power. Try turning C&Q off in the BIOS

UPDATE: I have managed to get a fairly stable overclock by putting the multiplier to 14x and the Bus Speed to 270. 3780MHz, voltage fluctuates between 1.392 and 1.408 so thats pretty good . I heard using the base clock is better for overclocking so i tried that. Any tips on making it even more stable?

RMA the board. That's the only tip I can give for a more stable overclock. A little vdroop is normal, but as you explained, it does it when idle. Going from 1.5 to 1.42 when idle is insane.
