Reinstalling Games

Thread Starter
I often install a new OS or make a new partition etc in which I have a lot of games I can't play because they are somewhere in my hard drives, but aren't installed on my current OS.

Is there a way to reinstall my games faster than just Steams internet downloading? For TF2, can I just copy and paste the folders (which would take minutes to transfer over compared with hours over internet download) and then install it from there?

Or am I doomed to reinstall every game/program every time I have a new OS?

you can copy/paste gcf files and game folders and such in your steamapps folder and it works great, i installed tf2 that way.

It's not working. Steam will run, but then TF2 won't show as installed. So I figure I'll try and run it as it's own game, but it tells me "Setup file 'gameinfo.txt' doesn't exist in subdirectory 'hl2'. Check your -game parameter or VCONFIG setting."

I look this up and all i get are a bunch of forum questions by people who pirated the game.

This is what i was talking about. How am I supposed to connect steam and the game without reinstalling it from the internet?

When you copy a game folder you still need to ask Steam to install it again. It will check and see its there, then just dl any missing files and good to go. At least this is how it worked for me. (TF2 was a little tricky though as it seems to use the hl game folder as well).

As long as your old steam folder (the one w/all your games) is visible to your new install, all you have to do is re-install the steam client while in the new OS install.

When you do this, point the installer at the old folder (i.e. tell the client to install Steam to the old folder, even though it's already sorta there), and everything should work perfect. I've done it dozens of times.

Non-steam games usually need re-installing though.

What do you mean "point it to the old folder"? My only options are "download game from steam (internet)"

I was able to make TF2 work because I downloaded steam again, copy/pasted TF2 folder in the steam folder, told steam to install it, and then it went:

"Ok you wanna download TF2? Alright lets see...oh wow! It's all already there! Done!"

But that's with steam. With non-steam games do I simply need to set the .exe in the game folder as a shortcut on my desktop and play it?

For your Steam games simply run Steam. You need not do anything abnormal. Steam will create whatever registry entries/OS dependencies it thinks it needs when it starts. NONE of your Steam games will need a reinstall.

I can't vouch for retail games though.
