Perhaps because 3D means the console has to do twice the work in the same amount of time, yet the PS3 often struggles to maintain 30 FPS in many intense games?

because 3d requires each frame to be rendered 2ce at slightly different angles, so framerates it effectively halved.

I shoulda been a shade more specific... i know how 3d is rendered :-D
I meant why he would say the cell processor can't do it appropriately.
*I'd think if Sony was dumping cash into this project and selling glasses and whatnot it'd be in their best interests to make sure it doesn't flop when it's released and every game plays like sludge.
but i do see your POV hybrid.

hmm yeah I've also been thinking about it, I don't see sony releasing it if it doesn't work, so maybe they found some super efficiant way of doing it. I'll wait for some reports...

AFAIK:
All the current 3dtvs use shutter glasses (which seem to be the best tech atm)
and if your tv was refreshing at 60hz, you would notice the flicker of the glasses flickering 30 times per second in each eye, whereas when they flicker 60 times per eye you cant notice it

Can I use this on my 120hz viewsonic?

Have fun playing your PS3 on it all by yourself since most of us will be playing the PS5 by then.

Um actually - people have been adopting 3D TVs alot. Especially the people who are just moving to HD now or are upgrading from older HD sets. Consumers have been known to use the logic - if Im upgrading or buying something now, why not future proof myself?

So the 3D update will cater to quite alot more people then you think it will. It will also promote 3D TVs so more people have a reason to get one other then just movies and TV. The more the merrier no?

So what were you saying again?

FHD3D I believe. You need a 120HZ TV as well as the HDMI 1.4 input. The PS3 doesn't have 1.4 itself but it can still put the 3D over 1.3 unlike other blu-ray players as long as the TV input is 1.4

These updates simply don't add the option to turn on 3D lol
They are graphical updates, if not total retools. If you turn on 3D - the developer has made the games loose graphic effects or say: less foilage. Things like that.
WipeoutHD looses it's dynamic 1080p native resolution and goes back to typical 720p for example.
Motorstorm is said to loose some effects but the developers have stated that in return - specific 3D only effects have been included.

I don't know the differences for PAIN or Superstardust HD but those games aren't full fledged games if you know what I mean. If there is any major differences, I'd be shocked. They are nice looking games by all means but not hardware pushing if you know what I mean.

Killzone 3 also will loose some graphic detail. Apparently, as the reveal demos that were shown recently, critics like Joystiq said that the 3D for it (as it stands now) takes away alot of detail noticeably enough. But that can be improved upon/changed considering how early it is to criticize.

Does it?

I don't know how rendering works, but isn't it the same image, but adjusted depending on the Z-buffer or something? Does it really require a complete re-rendering? Or just a bit of memory and the cell to do the re-jig?

Maybe someone who's used Nvidia's 3D stuff could elaborate (as they have stereoscopic drivers)
