Advice for storage solution

Thread Starter
Ok so I'm having some trouble with my PC. I have 4 drives on it, one is a 640gb cavier black which I use for OS and the other three are 1tb storage drives.

Whenever I boot up windows takes over 10 min to boot up. It never freezes just takes a long time. A couple days ago one of my TB drives stoped showing up for a while untill windows ran a check at boot that seamed to fix it.

So I am wondering if I should take the storage drives out and buy a external hard drive enclosure to support these three drives. I have never done this before and would like to know how these external enclosures work, I would assume that they would act just like an external USB hard drive but I am not sure.

So any advice on my slow boot times or the external hard drive enclosure(remember I need space for at least 3 drives) will be rep'ed and appreciated.

PS: I am in Canada so I mostly use NCIX or Newegg.ca

I would love to help you out with your external setup.. however I do not know what size your drives are. Therefore I can not recommend products to you. Sorry. :{

Maybe you should try and re-install the OS before you shell out $$$ on new equipment.

Hello mate
How about a Docking Station!
And you could test the drives with HDTune

Maybe this will help. I noticed that one of the partitions on my TB drive the (Drive L is marked as "System," that is where my old os was, but there is nothing on it but files now. The "C" drive is where Windows 7 is so shoudent that be marked "System"?

I will try out that HDtune though thanks for the input. rep+

Also is there any way to merge those partitions on Disk 1 without formating it?

Try doing CHKDSK on the OS drive. Unless you have a huge amount of startup items, there may be something wrong with your boot drive.

AFAIK, your other drives shouldn't effect your boot times, perhaps only slightly.

Another thing to check is to see if SATA cables are all plugged in, and you can try to switch SATA ports (plug the OS drive into a different port). Narrow down the cause by unplugging the other drives. If somehow they are slowing boot down, this'll help see which drive it is.

As for how externals work, you basically plug the drives into the SATA ports PCB base which will "drive" the HDs. When you plug it in, its seen as a removable drive. They're basically giant USB devices.

And for merging those partitions, no, but you can just move all the contents of "Anime" to a different drive (should take only 30 minutes), then delete the partition and expand L:. From what I've seen when creating partitions, you aren't able to delete "L:" and expand "F:" to it. The partition area has to be to the right of another partition area to expand.

I would put all the stuff on Disks 2-3. And then do a fresh install, formatting Disks 0-1 and deleting any partitions and volumes!

I was thinking of just doing a fresh windows install. The boot is the only time when its slow, when it finnaly boots up everything is fine. I will run tests and then reinstall windows.

As for the externals I think I might still be interested in buying a good one. Do you guys have any recommendations on a good enclosure that has room for 4 3.5" drives?
