i really like amd (last three systems have been amd) would not have settled for what i got in my sig cept my old system got hit by lightening (reminds me to get another surge protector)

There's better thermal compound than AS5 out on the market now and for less, too. AS5 is outdated. I would go with some Tuniq TX-2.

What games are you looking at playing? If your going for high end at high res, I would still go higher than the 5770. I teetered on 2 5770s, and the 5850. 5850 would be better for games that don't support Crossfire. I heard the 5830s were terrible for the price, but I don't know if that's true anymore.

was able to use my edu email to qualify for windows upgrade (cheap, cheap, cheap) so jumped on the radeon 5870. DX11!! (score)

wrong.... as5 is the #1 best out of the 80 he tested tied with another

This is AMD 4 GB or 8GB.... we use dual channel.... I'd stick with 4GB unless you run virtual enviroments or do lots of encoding... I just built mine and while gaming my RAM usuage is about 60%.... out of 4GB thats just a little over 2GBs

Honestly, I would be getting a 750W PSU if you plan on Crossfiring 2 cards, otherwise use a 500W as Stensby suggested. Also, ditch the SSD for now (while they do give good performance, it's not worth the price yet).
