Did you replace the thermal paste on the GPU when you mounted the GPU cooler?

(I have a feeling that we found the problem)

You have to. It's just like on your CPU. If you don't, there won't be proper contact between the GPU and the cooler and the card will get toasty.

yea... you need to apply TIM (AS5 or OCZ Freeze) on the GPU itself and also need to buy thermal pads for the video memory

you should stop using the video card until your take care of both unless you want to burn the card!

i have opened up some 8 and 9 series nvidia cards and the tim was already dried out and had air bubbles, so him cleaning it likely didn't affect anything. applying new tim is definitely a good idea though.

I'd recommend Arctic Cooling MX-2 instead of AS5, since it's just as good and isn't conductive. It's also cheap as dirt.

I've never removed a GPU cooler, so you probably know more about it than me. Nice CPU cooler BTW Mine's the old version though

Really?

My 5770 Hawk, OC'd to 970/1400 (from 875/1200) maxes out at 68C during 99% GPU usage and the fans spinning at 70%.

90C is way too high.
