The Celeron "D" will outperform the P4 in certain canned system/multi-media benchmarks and canned gaming benchmarks as much of those benchmarks are completed in DRAM and CACHE. However, in realtime use there is no doubt that a P4 630 @ 3.0GHz will outperform a Celeron "D" overclocked to 3.8GHz.

For the money though and if they are not power users, who cares about the performance issues? They will scroll through Excel most excellently and surf the internet at the speed of the Internet pipeline just fine.

You have picked a fine grouping of parts. I would go along with your view of the Celeron "D" regardless of higher end realtime benchmarking as the Celeron "D" will work just fine.

The mainboard will take the new 65nm Cerar Mill Celeron "D" and it runs with 512K Cache.

Are you gonna get them a video card, or use onboard because even if they aren't power useres intel onboard extreme graphics suck so horibbley hard. If they don't have a card may I suggest this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102670, or this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102670. The second is cheaper and would do great for what they do and a little games as well, or if no games are gonna be played then just go with anything over a gf3 or anything onboard better than intel extreme graphics.

ya i would go cheaper on the MOBO, they dont need a ll the capabilities of that one... and get a better videocard... and some cheap cheap cheap 2gb value ram... forget all youlearned here cuz they wont be gaming or OCing any, so cheap value stuff willmore than suffice, but it also sounds like they dont upgrade very often since you said they had an old pII.... so get 2gb of ram,a decent videocard(fx5900+) and then save on everything else, like get an asrock mobo or something....

I want to ensure they have quality parts, I have never used that motherboard company and I don't know how it will do.

As for 2GB of memory... There current system has 128MB... 1024 will be PLENTY!

I would stick exaclty to the list you have, there will be minimal difference between the P4 and Celeron D and if they do wanna game they'll be better off with the P4 and you can always add a vc in if they decide to game later down the road.
