Little lazy, Suggestions on SMP or GPU Folding?

Thread Starter
Guys,

I'm a little lazy (actually I work 60+ hours a week and don't have a lot of spare time)...so can you direct me to whether I should start folding using SMP or GPU?

I have an I7-975 overclocked and stable at 4.1Ghz, and I'm running a ASUS ATI 5870 Video Card. Which way do you think I should go? Or if you need more info, let me know. Thanks!

Well, you have 6GB of ram, if you could be bothered to set up the vmware -bigadv client you could fold with that. The 5870 isn't great for PPD and taxes the CPU a lot, you would pull way more points running -bigadv. Or, if you want you can fold SMP (CPU) for a good bit of PPD, though not quite what you would get with -bigadv.

I am going to be offline a while on my sig rig as i will be shipping it to Hawaii. I am going to be folding -bigadv at 4.4GHz as well as both GTX480's on water soon

Thanks guys! Read on the Bigadvs thread someone running it on 7 cores, and then running GPU as well. Is that possible with my setup or would it be too much for my CPU based on my 5870, as bwatt22 said?
Try to get one thing at a time, get the Bigadvs going. When you get that working then get the 5870 folding.

Gotcha, good call that. Thanks again!

My opinion would be to use the SMP client first. The SMP WUs are faster than the -bigadv WUs, and you need to complete 10 WUs before you get bonus points.

So I say do SMP until you get bonuses (plus it's a simple intro to Folding), then go to the VMware.

I agree with zodac. Run SMP for a few days with the passkey. Dont worry about the GPU for now.

Thanks, I've got Bigadv running now. I am 42% in to WU 2683. I am averaging about 32 minutes per percent, so should be done in about 29 more hours. Is that about right, or too slow (50 hours for WU 2683)? I'd like to try to get it optimized over the weekend, as I am out at a conference all next week and could fold 24x7 for like 5 days!

Also, I don't quite understand how the points are given out. Can someone point me to where that is described? Thanks again!

All in for Team 37726!
