You could always use a program like XAMPP. No physical server needed. (Other then the computer you are learning on)

IMO HTML is not a programming language. It's a mark up language.

When picking a language, you need to decide if you want to use Windows API's or if you want cross-platform compatibility. If you do want to use Windows API's then I would recommend C#. If you are looking for cross platform then Java/Python/Ruby is a good place to start.

That's ass-backwards.

Many others are recommending scripting languages like HTML or Javascript. That's also full of fail, considering you're asking to learn how to program.

I'd recommend Java.

I would look at the Shelly Cashman books

http://www.course.com/shellycashman/

It will walk you through with an example of the fundamentals and then give you projects to accomplish to shore up the concept.

Personally I would start with VB and get the basics down and then move on to what language you want.

I personally equate, " I want to program," to "I want to drive." Drive what, to the store, a racetrack, long haul etc....

You need a goal - then base the language you learn on achieving that goal.

Thats why I was saying if he hasnt been able to grasp class concepts, start basic and low and get the ability to get basic coding and loops in. Just like you said, script isnt really code.

Plain old java is the best place to start. They have a very handy API that gives you a place to fall back to when your memory is jogged. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/ . I learned C++ on www.cprogramming.com when i was 14 but to be honest, the best thing you can do is take a structured course at school. You need to code daily in order to learn it. Repetition is key here . Stay away from html, it is just a flashy web scripting language. Unless you are setting up databases, you are not doing any "real" programming. As far as IDE's go, I would do BloodshedDEV for c++ or Jgrasp for Java. good luck and i hope you pick up this hobby.

I agree with this...VB or C#. Very easy to learn the mechanics of coding and you can actually make some worth while programs that can integrate with Office software or websites through .NET

Plus you see results quickier than you do in languages like C++ since most of the time you'll make your interface first (the form) and then code the functions for it.

After you've played with one of those for a bit...move onto JAVA.
