Building New Computer, Would Love Suggestions :)

Thread Starter
So I haven't built a computer in such a long time, my last build was a q6600 with a 260 GTX and that was pretty much the standard for a great computer at a good cost, without going overboard.

So I am looking to spend about $1000-1200 on a good gaming computer and then the rest of my money will go towards a monitor(s).

So what is the best buy in gear right now?

Much thanks for all your suggestions.

Get a i7 for sure and even though I would like to recommend a Fermi card I would probably go for a Ati card for the price/performance ratio(unless you would like to stay with nVidia)

For a monitor I would recommend the Samgsung 2343...I have one and love it.

Most will agree with the following
  • i7 930
  • Gigabyte or Asus Mobo
  • G.Skill or Corsair RAM
  • WD Caviar Black 640GB or F3 Spinpoint 500GB HDD
  • Corsair new HX series, Seasonic, Silverstone, or Antec new TP PSU
  • HAF X for Air Cooling, Corsair Obsidian 800D/700D for Water Cooling.
  • Radeon 5850/5870 if you're not biased, better price for performance ratio, it consumes less power, puts out less heat and both can OC to match nvidias best right now (GTX 470/480)

Are you going to be using Cross fire/SLi?

Any parts being reused from your present rig (case, psu, HDD etc)

What resolution do you want to game at i.e how big is your monitor going to be.

For the mobo and cpu it'll come down to X58/i7 930 vs. H55/i7 860 etc.

For the video cards based on what I've seen right now the Fermi cards perform well with AA enable at 1920x1080 resolution.

For the best bang for your buck I'd buy an ATi 5870 (this is coming from someone who has a gtx 480 so fanboyism went out the window) because they consume less power and run cooler and cost way less.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for all the great info. So ati5870 sounds like the way to go on the gpu, what mobo CPU combo do you all suggest? I see there is two different i7s now.

There are more than 2, but the ones in your price range are the 920 and the 930. The 930 is pretty much just the new version of the 920, so i would get that. I love my evga tri-sli mobo, but there are lots of great i7 motherboards out there, depends on what features you need.

the 860 is an example of an i7 which fits in a 1156 socket and not 1366
