so if I am not looking to spend over $1200 I guess the h55/i860 route is out of the question. So X58/i930 with a 5870, what ram is the best match for this?

Is there a microcenter near you? They have the i7-930 for $200. Great deal. I'll be picking up one of those tomorrow.

Yeah there is one about 30 mins from me, thats a great deal, I will have to head out tomorrow. Is there a specific stepping that is really great, or does it not matter with these?

Any other good deals going on at microcenter tomorrow?

If you're building a game machine, I'd definitely suggest you get a i5 750. 4 Cores without hyper threading at a good price. Microcenter has em....and fry's have good cpu/mobo combo deals coming out every friday at midnight. Use the money you save from buying an i5 750 or i7 860 instead of an i7 9XX series to buy an SSD or video card. Like many of ppl here said, get an ATI 5XXX series card for great performance per cost value. If you're looking for a good case, I'll sell you a brand new never opened Antec 900 or lightly used thermaltake v9 Black edition. If you live in Arizona or California....we could deal in person...

Get an i7 920 at least and oc the heck out of it. If you have a microcenter nearby, give them a visit to benefit from their $100 discount on the 920 and 930 as well I believe, though I could be wrong on the 930.

Get an ATI card. I basically went for the most bang for buck GPU and got my Asus 5850, which turned out to be an oc beast. I'm so content running everything on high in BC2 and getting +70 fps the whole time.

Okay so I bought an i7 930, I'm getting together all my other items to purchase.

Best CPU cooler nowadays for the i930?

Can someone link me to the best deal on the 5870, and also a good motherboard and ram to pair with that? Much appreciated!

Also I'm just curious if it's worth it to do ssd for my games and stuff and then regular drive for the rest, or is it not worth the price for the bit of extra performance?

Ok here's what you should do:

I don't know your budget so here are a few options:

Motherboard
:
flaming blade - $180

evga LE-$199.99

Asus Rampage II Gene - $209.99

Cpu heatsink:

NH-D14 (oos)

Prolimatech Megahalem

memory:
Buy 2 sets of 3X1 gb kits
kingsotm Cas 8
Be vary of using high memory modules with the NH-D14 heatsink

Ripjaws Cas 7
Somewhat higher than the kingston ones

Or 1 kit of 3X2gb:
Gskill cas7

Patriot Cas 7

SSD:
(definitely worth it for those who use a lot of programs and want a speedy computer)

The one I'm using:
Intel 80GB G2
TRIM ready out of the box with win 7

OCZ Vertex 60gb
The Vertex probably has the biggest customer base atm.
That means you can trouble shoot etc easily.

Corsair 64gb

gpu:

gigabyte 5870 OC

Asus 5870 V2

Or try to look in the For Sale section of the forums for a used 5870 with life time warranty from manufacturers like XFX (reference designs allow you to change the voltages for higher overclocks)

Hope this helps

if it's a single-card gaming rig, I'd get an i5 750 and 4gb of ram coupled w/any decent mobo (the Asus 1156 boards are generally pretty nice). That's if it were me, personally. Take the $ you save and get a GTX480 or 5970. The H5O is a nice cooler as well.
