Glass Reservoir

Thread Starter
Presently I'm looking to do a bit of a upgrade to my LCS. I've found a glass orb that I would like to incorporate into my LCS as the reservoir. I'm unsure of the feasibility of drilling holes in it, as well as then making a inlet/outlet ports.

Any idea's / pointers?

Thanks in advance for any help.

pick up a glass drill bit: http://www.buy.com/prod/glass-and-ti...208055005.html

but remember youre going to need holes bigger than your tubing, because you'll need barbs too: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/76...g_-_12_ID.html

other than that i think its a great idea

its a great idea if you got some flow over it i think it might dissapate a bit of heat as well

Glass would be extremely brittle to connect your barbs or fittings to...so thats what I would be most worried about.

what was the glass orb used for? if the glass is tempered glass you wont be able to drill into it cause it will shatter. might want to try using a blow torch to melt the glass then pulling the glass out so it makes "barbs".

Sounds interesting but I think you'll have a problem with the barbs. Still, I'd like some pics to see it. Perhaps you could get one of the mod guys to custom fab one for you in plastic.

It's originally a liquor bottle.
Well it's less of a orb (well part is) and more of skull (anyone care to take a guess of what liquor?) I'll get a picture up by tomorrow night. Sorry if I'm vague, I just always worry of people running off with idea's on me (stupid right?).

I'm worried most about shattering and getting the barbs tight enough to seal (wouldn't that not work on a non-flat surface?) I figure they can be sealed from the outside for extra protection (don't wanna seal the inside [add chemicals to the internal system]) Oh and how I would even get the other end of the barb into the bottle to attach with.

I'd prefer it be the glass since A) don't have to worry about chemicals (been through two waterfall reservoirs now), and the way light works with it I bet glass would look better.

I'd guess like glass is like a quarter inch thick.

It's tough since glass is brittle and hooking barbs on an uneven surface is impossible without using a lot of silicone (it won't look pretty).

If the surface is even you could use bulkheads to make a water-tight seal, then attach the barb to the bulkhead.

Drilling glass is a whole different headache. You're going to need a high-quality diamond drill bit and then you're going to need a steady steam of cool water flowing over the area you drill to prevent the glass from cracking. It's even harder on thinner glass.
