Are photorealistic video games possible?

Thread Starter
Have you ever wondered what the future of videogames will be like? Do you ever think that a videogame will be capable of cinematic graphics/photorealistic graphics? If the current trend keeps up I'd say in about 10-15 years or so we will have video games that are indistinguishable from movies! Honestly, could you even imagine that being possible?

I know from my experience with Modler and Lightwave that it would take an INCREDIBLY powerful graphics card to produce the hundreds of millions of polygons and shaders needed to create a photo-realistic video game.

But do you think this will ever be possible? I'm sure when the very first videgames came out that they never would have thought that games would come this far (HL2, F.E.A.R.!!!!). It is amazing......

Yes definatly, some games already photo realistic but unfortunatly they are usually just point and click games............... BUT all is not lost HALF LIFE 2 Lost coast is a little mod which shows the progression of whats to come, the level itself should only take about 5 minutes to complete as its just a teaser but it took me about 20 because every time I walked past something I stopped went back just to have a second look its that pretty ;-)

5 years.

Look at Moores law. Same is for video. It is an exponential gain...

Christ, look at the last five years and the previous five years before that. It has less to do with ability than economically feasible.

My guess is they cross paths in 5 years.

Some games are pretty good looking some areas, but let themselves down in others. I think the character models in HL2 are good, but the backdrops are just a picture, theres no depth to it. Vehicles and buildings are good in BF2, the overall map is awsome but when you get down to it the ground texure and the shrubbery (NI!) is not so good. Some of the weapons look cartoony as well.

I heard someone say UT2007 looks realistic, but I think it looks a long way from real. Nothing in life is that shiny, they are supposed to be tanks, not Ferraris

Tanks vs. sprts cars is a matter of game mechanics, not photo reality graphics.

I have seen systems recently, then when firing a gun, show your *skin* quiver and bounce off sweat.

Hell, the ability is already here. The problem is purely economics (ability to drive into consumer space...)

Sooner than 5 years! alot sooner, I am running 136fps on my 78 with that lost coast so if current hardware is capable of running a next gen game then what games are we gonna see for the release of the G80?

p.s the water in lost coast is the best I have seen to date, dl it and put a couple of rounds into a boat and watch the effects

i think the water is better in FEAR because of the ripple effect when you jump in it. but it is very good looking in HL2:LC. Farcry is not far behind either

Not talking about performance, talking about looks. UT2007 is way to shiny, the tanks look shiny, Ferraris look shiny, tanks aren't supposed to look shiny, Ferraris are supposed to look shiny

There was a high-resolution mod for HL2 I heard about a month or two ago and saw screenshots of. I literally thought it was a picture of a person, until I saw the same character model shooting at a Strider. Like Satansmurf said, the ability is there. They just need the money, and enough people with systems powerful enough to keep the FPS up.

Photorealism is coming out in alot of games at the moment and it lookws just amazing..Namely the games FEAR and HL2...I love lost Coast as that level really shows off some graphical power.
