4890 CF or 5000 series or GTX400?

Thread Starter
Hi guys my GTX280 just died on me recently and now looking for new cards again. Just wondering which card should i consider to avoid bottleneck of my current system?

I'm considering of getting the old 4890s and CF em since my mobo supports crossfire and the cards are now cheaper. Do you guys think this is a good idea?

Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

get a 5870. people want around $150+ for the 4890's, so just get a nice 5 series card

thx the non-eyefinity version yea? just wondering if i decide to CF em is that going to be overkill for my pc?
id just shoot for a reference card. they'll all do eyefinity but unless you plan on doing a hard core eyefinity setup theres no point in the 'six' edition

Don't start off with Crossfire unless there's a super deal. Get the fastest single card you can afford. Personally I'd get a HD5850, great price/performance. It also overclocks great and is very efficient (much lower power consumption than Nvidia's Fermi)

Your gpu has lifetime warranty? Have you tried RMA, might save you money.

i would get a ATI 5870 cause its great performer and its easy on the electric bill when your loading it up and having it idle. I always take power consumption into the equation instead of just raw power lol

unfortunately no its only a year warranty and i've voided the warranty anyway by watercooling it. have tried baking it but no success, too bad its still a pretty capable card

how much differences are there between the 5850 and 5870?
i personally would go with a 470 or an unlocked 465 if I wanted a single card, but the CF 4890's will destroy a 5850/470 and probably even a 5870 with ease, for around $300 off of OCN here...

5870 vs 5850

Difference isn't too big, but there's that little bit of satisfaction of owning a slightly stronger card

Note they weren't using ATI Catalyst 10.3 or higher, giving them lower FPS compared to if they were tested using Catalyst 10.3/higher.

Yes, with a lot more heat and much higher power consumption being the price

Buy a single card 5850/5870 (or GTX 470/480 if you want to fold), which leaves you the option to crossfire/SLI for the future as opposed to buying an older crossfire setup that limits your upgrade path.
Just my 2 cents.
