The sound comment is straight from the developers. They designed a sound engine that mixes itself for the game. it is not compatible with current sound cards, so everything is done on the Cpu, and it is a resource hog, which is why there is a drastic jump from 2 cores to 3 cores, because the sound processing gets its own thread to play in.
I just looked it up and indeed it's true

Performance

Naturally, doing all of the audio processing in software puts the CPU under some extra strain. Since Xbox360/PS3 has fixed hardware and both have multiple cores available to do many things in parallel, you could say this is only an issue for the PC SKU where we may end up having less cores than on console. In Bad Company, all audio processing is performed sequentially on a single hardware thread regardless of platform. For PC this means that a CPU with a higher frequency will help more than one with more cores. But of course, there are other areas of the game that execute in parallel, so having more than 2 cores will help the game in general. This is an area we're constantly looking to improve and the results of our efforts will show up in future titles.
Now if you included links/sources I would be less likely to make an ass of myself!

Still though, you can pull 60FPS with a dual, you gotta give me that!

Anyway at the OP, I still say get a 5850 and if you find your CPU struggling then upgrade :l Since a 8800 GTS 640MB with a quad would still struggle

by max i mean x4 aa and x8 or x16 af. but 5850 it is then i guess. i might as well wait for the next big thing and do a new build. BC2s a mediocre game anyway

I can play it with GTX 275 (SLI off) maxed out @ 1080p and get a steady 25fps-40fps
with SLI on, and my cards overclocked I can get about 60fps at the lowest.
just info

To chime in..

With a stock i7, and a 5770 overclocked to 1000/1300, I get about ~45 FPS at 1080p fullscreen. It rarely drops below 40, except when I die in a tank. But I think everything chokes at that.

Just tested it myself using fraps as a FPS counter.

Edit: Maxed, as in, all the settings highest in-game. I'm not sure if people are referring to the CCC's AA and AF.

It's not quite your requirements, but jeez, everyone makes it out like it's not playable at all.

You're not going to get a constant 50-60fps on 1920x1080 resolution. Won't happen with your cpu.

+1

Single 5770 I'm running everything on max DX 11, and I get 45-60 FPS. Crossfire enabled it's over 100 fps.

I don't see how you 5770 people are maxing the game out at acceptable frame rates(by acceptable I mean minimum of 35fps). Are you guys running lower than 1920x1080?

I'm running gtx470 overclocked to 800/1600/1950 and I only get 35-70fps with maxed setting 1920x1080 4xaa/16af. I usually float around 45ish fps. Are you guys talking single or multiplayer?

I wouldn't go as far as to say that crossfire 5770's are better than a 5870 but I'm looking at the benchmarks and they're almost just as good and you can get them for the same price as a 5850.

If you think BC2 is a mediocre game, why would you start a thread about it wanting to know what hardware you needed to max it?

I honestly don't think BC2 is as great as so many people here make it out to be, but this is just weird.
