What mobo for X4 620?

Thread Starter
Hey guys ive decided to get a athlon 2 x4 620 cpu from my local microcenter but i dont know what board to get. I would like to overclock the cpu and get a decent overclock on it, im looking to spend $75 or less on the mobo.

Id like to reuse my ddr2 ram as im gonna just buy 2x2gb later when I get the extra cash. I dont need firewire or raid or anything fancy, i just need a decent board that overclocks good, has a pci express slot lol.

If you could please post a link to a board from microcenter for me so I know what to look for at my local store in mayfield heights cleveland ohio

I plan on buying the cpu and mobo by saturday at the latest, I wont have enough to get a aftermarket cooler right away so I'll pick one up later. I just want to get on the quad core bandwagon and have some sort of a upgrade path later.

I just need help selecting a decent board that uses ddr2 ram as I want to reuse my curent ram to keep my upfront prices as cheap as possible as im on a extremely lmited budget. I figure a decent board wont have onboard video but if there is one that does have onboard video that would be great.

The only reason why I would want onboard video is so when I sell my current mobo cpu and gpu online I will be able to still use the x4 620 online until I can order my new video card. thanks alot guys I appreciate it

What you need is an AM2+ motherboard. This will support the Athlon II (or any other AM2, AM2+, or AM3 processor) and your DDR2.

If you only own 1 graphics card, then the particular chipset won't matter much. If you plan on using Crossfire or SLI, there are also boards with those features.

The board in my signature is exactly what you need for overclocking if you only have 1 graphics card. It is an AM2+ board with 785G chipset. Any brand will do, so pick your favorite from what is available at your Microcenter.

The AM2+ 770 and 790 chipset boards may also suit your overclocking needs.

Look for any combo deals available at the store.

Just remember: AM2+ (not AM2 or AM3)

Hey bman, I've browsed a bit microcenter's site and they don't really give a lot of options. For 75$ (69$ after rebate) I found this Gibabyte mobo that supports AM2+ and AM3 CPUs and DDR2:

I wouldn't advice you go any cheaper as those mobos are severely limited. This one already supports 6core CPUs so it opens a nice upgrade path.
