AMD 965 POST problem, HELP!!!

Thread Starter
Hi Folks,

I'm new to this system building, please forgive my ignorance and go easy on me...

I have a pretty irritating problem with my new build. I cannot get it to POST properly or get me to the BIOS screen. When it is down to just the PSU, Mobo and processor I can get the POST to beep at me. But when I plug in the memory in any configuration the system refuses to beep at all. Am I loosing the plot?! The memory is down as AMD compatible and I'm pulling my hair out wondering how to get this thing going.

Any help would be really appreciated, I'm about to resort to a pc repairman, please help keep my wallet and my dignity intact.

Thanks!

The memory could be DOA. Do you have another system to try it in?

EDIT: How many sticks of ram do you have? If you have more than 1 and each one fails, I'd say it wasn't the ram.

Checked all of the connections?

No, this is my first build so all I've got is what I've bought. Any suggestions? Should I go and buy some cheap ddr2 memory and test that?

Edit: I've got 2 sticks and tried both as well as one at a time and in each slot and it all leads to nowt.

I've also checked all the connections. Currently got the whole system sitting on a breadboard and all the bits and pieces are hooked up nicely. Its driving me mental.

Is the 8-pin CPU power connected? Both connectors to the videocard connected? It sounds like you may have forgot to connect something.

Other then that, the mobo could be DOA or the power supply could be bad.

Yeah all power connectors are plugged in. Weird thing is it does post without memory, just refuses to do so when it is present

You could try to reset the CMOS (bios). Look it up in the manual if you don't know how.

Either way, it's hard to pinpoint such a problem without you having other parts to test. I'd suspect the mobo, but that's just a guess.

Make sure you have that memory module pushed in firmly. You tried without the video card, and 1 memory stick at a time? Tried putting that stick in a different slot? Reset CMOS? It is obviously your motherboard or memory, so try to test that memory in another PC if you can.

edit: and when I say it could be your motherboard, it could be just a loose connection somewhere (happens all the time).

Yea i'd say plug in the memory reset cmos (usually just involves taking the battery out for a minute) and then try again. If it still doesn't work I'd say you have bad ram

I brought the motherboard about 5 mths before this new processor. Is it possible it is not supported in the cmos?
