Phenom II 940 with DDR2 @ 800 MHz?

Thread Starter
Hello there guys,

I've got a Foxconn A7DS-A board with 4gb DDR2 ram running at max 800 Mhz with a 7750 BE.

I'm considering upgrading my CPU but not sure, if a Phenom II 940 with DDR2 @ 800Mhz would any good.

Because I cannot afford upgrading my memory right now, as I recently purchased a 5850.

Seems like my CPU is kinda bottlenecking the GPU so I have upgrade something but not sure what :-)

Waiting for your helpful input,

thanks in advance!

Yeah Phenom II 940 would be good with DDR2 800

I run my PH II 955 with 4GB 800MHz and its great

I say 940 would be worth it mate!

A 940BE doing 1066Mhz ram vs 800Mhz ram has little difference in performance besides synthetic benchmarks.

And a 940BE is a huge step up from a 7750BE in everyway possible, but it and enjoy

Good for me. (Look at sig rig. The ram is DDR2 800Mhz.)

If I were you I would go for an AM3 955 or 965. Maybe even a 1055T or 1090BE if your board supports it. The 940 is a a good chip but is AM2+. No DDR3 memory support.

Wauw, 5 replies in like few minutes..
Guess I have to forget Tom's forums from now on ;-)

Thanks a lot for the great inputs guys.
And for the DDR3 support.. I think I won't be able to to upgrade all my memory in the near future, after upgrading my Gfx card and CPU.

So as long as DDR2 @800 is OK, I will stick with it :-)

Thanks a lot again folks!

My ram is different from yours because of speed obviously, but take a look at my signature and look at the link of my comparison of CPU's. I did the same exact upgrade in CPU's and it made a huge difference for me. My review is only with a single HD 4870, but you can still see a huge difference.
