Q9400 won't overclock! :( - Page 3

Cheers lonewolf I downloaded core temp and it registers it as 1.2875 V PHEW! In my bios there is no option to lock the memory speed at 400Mhz I can only change the ratio from 4:5, 2:3 or 1:1 so when I try and up the external clock (nowhere does it say FSB in my bios only PSB :S) so i'm not sure where to go from here. As i mentioned before I have tried OC'ing the CPU at 350 and downclocking the RAm so it is at 350 also but it doesn't play ball.

I'd drop the memory ratio to 2:3 and see if that helps. You can use CPU-Z to report the memory speed if you manage to boot into Windows.

If you do get a successful boot, keep CoreTemp open, and then run Prime95 for a few hours to see if it will stay stable. If you still cannot get a successful boot with the memory at 2:3, you can try upping the memory voltage slightly from stock, probably .1v to begin with.

1.2875v is still a relatively high CPU voltage, so if you can't get a successful boot after all of this, I'd say you have a mainboard issue, a memory issue, or a combination of the two, and it's time to seek new parts. For reference, my Q9450 is running overclocked at 1.225 volts.

Yer i've tried dropping it to 2:3 but no luck. And as with the voltages my mobo only lets me go down to 1.2875 as a minimum! I don't think it could be that much of a memory issue because with my e6320 I was able to run the memory at 408Mhz (DDR2 816) and at 343Mhz (DDR2 686) both being stable. but i'm new to overclocking so I don't know whether this makes a difference .

If your board only goes down to 1.2875 --ouch. time for a new board.

You gave it your best shot. If you haven't already sold your E6320, slap it on that board and Craigslist it to pay for a new one.

Not a lot of 775 DDR2 boards for overclocking left on the market. Here's one possibility if you can find it, though:

ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo

I'd look for an Intel P45 chipset mainboard. Gigabyte, ASUS, and MSI are all brands I'd consider. Brands I avoid (no disrespect to those who own them) are ECS/EliteGroup, Asrock, and Foxconn. At this point, I wouldn't get DFI either, because they're shutting down their consumer mainboard business, so support is very hit-or-miss.

Your second option is to sell the RAM too, and get DDR3. This would allow you a couple of other options, like the very good Gigabyte GA EP45T-USB3P and it would set you up for easier upgrades down the road.

Right I was thinking the same kinda xD. I'm selling my CPU to my bro for 30-40 quid and he already has a decent enough mobo so he doens't need a crappy abit ab9 quadgt . I might sell my mobo with the 4GB of DDR2 Ram on ebay and see what I get, hopefully about 60 quid or around that. I could get the ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo because I can find it for £100 in the UK. Would not upgrading to DDR3 memory restrict me somewhat though in the future? I have also found this other board (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-...-SATA-RAID-ATX) which seems pretty decent. I cannot find that Gigabyte motherboard anywhere though :S I can however find the EP43T version of it which is typical :L

That's what he is telling you. The higher you go the more unstable it gets. It could be stable at DDR2 850, but unstable at DDR2 852. It's not a "what-you-think" type of situation. Lower your multiplier one notch and go for a higher OC.

I have never gone beyond 850 I said its stable at that and i've been lowering the multiplier aswell, as I mentioned in previous posts. And I know its not a what-you-think situation I didn't say that . I knew that it was running at 850 because it said so in the bios i just put down the value that wasn't multiplied by 2 because that is what i change in my bios settings. I don't think there is anything else I could try looks like i'll just ahve to get a new mobo.

So you don't have any other multiplier clocks available for your RAM on that board/BIOS?

DDR3 RAM is a newer standard, and could be moved to a new Socket 1156 or 1366 mainboard later --why would it restrict you?

DDR2 is slowly being phased out. I'm hanging onto it because I have 8GB of it, but if I were building a system from scratch at this point, it would have DDR3.
