core i7 vs Xeon

hi friends

i need some help
which is better for server core i7 920 or x3460
is there any mainboard to support 2 core i7 cpu?
if has please refer

if not which main you refer for Core i7 980GX? (not too expensive the cpu is expensive enough)

we want 16GB DDR3 which brand you refer? (not expensive)
a good PSU ? (not expensive)

we want to use windows server 2008

The Xeon processors are supposed to be of better quality because they are binned better.

I'm not certain about the motherboard, so I can't help you there.

As far as the PSU choice, I'd go with a Seasonic or Corsair brand. Basically something with at least an 80Plus rating of Bronze or better.

i7 only have one QPI link.
Nehalem-based Xeons have 1-4 QPI links. You need a QPI link for each socket. Also note that the Xeons use a different socket.

Depends on the workload. A single 6-core CPU may beat a two 4-core in some caes.

Actually, in most cases the Xeons use the exact same socket (in this case 1366). It's a matter of micro-code updates (bios updates) as to whether or not a given board supports the Xeon version.

for best performance you will want to use triple channel memory - which means you don't want to use 16GB...

Seasonic and corsair are usually quality supplies but you can't suggest any 80+ bronze supply to be high quality, it doesn't work that way.
