GTX470 > HD5850 after DRIVERS?

Thread Starter
Hey!

I have heard and read a lot how GTX470 became a lot faster and better recently due to drivers. Well, where are people getting this from and where can I see this?

I ask because I am thinking between HD5858, HD5870 and GTX470!

Thanks.

I would buy a 5850 as you will easily be able to clock to 5870 speeds and then you are only ~3% behind a 5870 performance wise. You will probably be able to clock a bit further than that though. This being said on average 5870's will clock higher. I don't think its worth the difference in price though. There isn't the same room to OC on the 470 due to the heat issues.

I say if money is not that big of an issue, get a 5870 or a GTX 480 then. Between the 5850 ang 470 there is not much of a big difference right now between the two. If Physx and Cuda are important to you then get the GTX 470. Neither is really a bad choice. The 470 wins some and the 5850 wins others.

Also, I really get sick of the heat comments. The first comment out of everyone is always about heat. The 480 usually gets hotter than the 470 but heat is not that big of an issue if you use a simple custom fan profile. With my OC (in sig) and auto fan, my card gets up to 90C in Kombuster...which I admit is warm. I made a custom fan profile for 1C=1% and my card so far has yet to go over 74C. Plus, i am still only at .962v and should have a lot of OC room left. At 74% fan, I can barely hear it over my case fans. Granted, if you have a super quite system, I guess some people could get annoyed by the fan but not me anyways.

470s easily reach 800MHz core, a 30% overclock.

Reference 5850's easily clock to 950 without a vcore bump. With stock cooling. Since performance is up and down between the two cards, the 5850 seems like the better choice, assuming it's still cheaper.

I wouldn't say easily. Maybe some cards. I'm on my 2nd 470 and just ordered another for SLI and I can tell you it takes a bunch of volts to go from 775 to 800 core stably. I'm at .975 volts at 775 core, but i need 1.050 to hit 800. My last card couldn't even hit 800 at 1.087. (Max voltage without flashing BIOS)

However that's not to say that some users aren't running around with cards clocked to 915 core, whoopin a$$ on overclocked 5870s!!

On my card I can easily reach 850 but heat does start to become an issue. Also I was unable to get 800 without a vcore bump. If you don't mind fan noise then you don't have anything to worry about especially at 100% fan. But personally i don't really need it overclocked that high for regular use so mine is down to 725 and while folding it gets to about 70C with fans at ~80

Nvidia does physx. If you're a pc gamer and you're a graphics whore then physx should matter to you. I have no idea why anyone wants an Ati card if it doesn't and won't ever support physx. I mean I play pc games for graphics and special effects consoles don't get. So why would I or anyone for that matter settle for an ati card? Because its 60 dollars cheaper? Well, eh physx means alot to me so I'd cough up the cash for it.
