I never buy phones on contract. I do not want to be stuck with a certain network for 24 months. In addition, some phones are blocked on certain networks and will not allow you to use a different SIM. I need flexibility and I have multiple SIM cards with different numbers : German/Belgium and the Luxo one I use on a daily basis. From september I will be in the UK, so I will add an UK based carrier. Having an unlocked phone is more expensive but offers more freedom.

I am not shocked about these prices. The iPhone 3Gs was 800 euros without a contract in my area. You would get it for 250 euros for a 50 euros/month contract. The minimum duration is 24 months and you do not have flat on internet data. After you reach your 10 GB allocated, you start paying. You do have flat on everything else within the country.

24 months x 50 euros / month = 1200 euros. This excludes the additional charges you might incur. So you get a 250 euro iphone and for this price the contract is 1200 euros with no possibility of cancelling the contract.

Don't you still have to pay to upgrade?

To me that's getting screwed twice. Maybe only I can see the obvious here.
Amazing. Though not surprising in the least. It will make it that much more appealing to the target audience and still sell well.

While that reasoning seems okay, think of it this way. The total cost of the phone and service for 2 years is 1450 euros if you signed contract. Buy the phone outright for 1200 euros and and you're left with 250 euros for 2 years worth of service. I don't know how they do it in Europe but 250 euros will not be enough to get 2 years worth of service, maybe 5 or so months yeah.

Interesting, isn't. The apple logo and the fashion statement has driven a device like this to be more expensive than a mid range laptop..

I have a 15 euro/month fixed contract. Everything is free (calls/sms/mms) within the country. I rarely use internet on my phone, because buying a wi-fi capable phone allows me to hook up to the multiple free hot spots in my city. The biggest bill I had was 25 euros due to roaming.

As you can see for some people, there are far better contracts . Why should I buy an iPhone with a 50 euro / month contract when I can use the iPhone with a 15 euro / month contract which allows me to quit at any time, if I hit a financial snag.
