My wife gets work email (100-200/day) and watches about an hour a day of streaming video on her iPhone. She uses about 125mb/mo.

I get my work email and do some occasional web surfing on my Tilt2. I use under 100mb/mo.

If you look at your statement, you'd be surprised at how little data you actually use.

That said, you can get a 3 and 4gb plan any time you use that much data - they cost $35 and $45 respectively. It's not like Comcast where they send you a nastygram saying that you've exceeded your limit and then turn off your service if you do it again.
I use alot. ESPECIALLY on vacation as I stated.

If you go onto the AT&T site, they have a usage calculator for these data plans. You go to each category and slide a button to show how much of X you use, and how the equates to the cap. I was over the 2GB cap before I got half way through the test.

that's asinine though. Look at what you're saying, buy $35 for 3GB when you need it ontop of the $25/month for the 2GB plan. Why not just keep the unlimited plan for $30/month?

The key is unlimited for $30 as compared to 6GB for $60 for just that month.

You just browse the web every once in awhile. That's for you.
For me, I browse the web all the time.
I'm constantly checking my emails.
I use the Youtube app as well as some Jailbroken video apps alot
I also upload alot of videos and pictures as well.
Not to mention, I like to stream my music over the 3G network so I dont have to store a single song on my phone. Instead I can put podcasts and movies.
Oh and I have Cylay which tracks my phone all the time incase I ever loose it. Pretty sure that uses a bit of the network too.
Im within the first week of my billing period. I've used a GB. By next week, I'll probably have used 2. The end of the month maybe 2 and a half or 3 if Im pushing it. I havent even tethered yet this month either.

I overly use my iPhone and I know that not everyone does the stuff I do. But the point Im trying to make is - why settle for a cap if the price is just about the same as the unlimited was? You're not really saving as much money as you think you are. $60 a year of savings is not significant at all if you're going from unlimited to 2 freakin GBs.

Maybe there are different quality levels per source?

Yeah, I've been streaming a ton of NetFlix TV shows (pretty much all I watch now) and have only hit about 30gb.

I was looking at my bill...not an estimation utility.

Do you really use 6gb worth of data on your phone without tethering?

Fair enough...but that's a helluva lot of web pages.

My wife (uses more data than I do) watches a lot of videos as well. I'm not sure how but they're usually like TMZ and E! Online clips among other things.

Put your phone storage to use, man!

That's probably a periodic packet or two...likely negligible.

Don't forget that your iPhone will also connect to WiFi. Why not connect it to a wireless network? Free ones are pretty much everywhere these days.

Regardless, if you're already on an unlimited plan, you can keep it. And it's good that you know how much data you use so that you can plan for yourself. My point is mainly that most people who are freaking out have no idea how much data they really use and think that they're going to get screwed by not having an unlimited plan. Whereas most users can save themselves $15/mo by going to the 250mb/mo plan.
