I am totally lost on how to overclock my CPU

There is so much to learn and so much to do that I dont know where to start. I have read and read forum after forum and I still can find directions to match my mother board and cpu can you guys please please please help me OC my system.

I have:

I7 930 Batch 687

Hyper 212Plus Cooler

Asus P6X58D-E

Corsair 850W

6 Gigs of Gskill PI series RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-335-_-Product

2 Samsung Spinpoint 1TB HD's

Asus 4870HD DarkNight

Corsair Obsidian Case

Win XP PRO

I beg for some help. I ran 3dMark05 stock and I got 20,000 and I know I can do better then this. I would like to get my system to 3.6 or 3.8 on air. I can give my email or even my phone number to whom will be willing to help me.

Ok,

Well I have that motherboard, its great

Firstly, don't bench with 05. Bench with vantage . Secondly, the CM212 isn't a great aftermarket cooler, I think this was the one that was developed for the old Q series of quad cores and isn't up to the job of cooling high end OC's

Thirdly, If you want to OC your processor, you can hit 3.6 @1.27 give or take on your vcore. When your machine boots, HIt delete and go into AI Tweaker. Set your AI Overclock tunder to Manual.

On your CPU ratio setting, set this to 21.

Disable intell speedstep and turbomode tech

If you want 3.6 Ghz, set your BCLK to 171

Set your DRAM frequency to 1600 or as close as you can.

IN DRam Timing control you can set your Timings in there for your memory.

move down to CPU voltage, i'd start this off with 1.25 and we can increase it from there if its not stable, mine was stable at 1.27 with a 3,8Ghz OC, but it got a bit hot and was sticking over 70 on load, need better fans

If you really want to, you can set your ICH and your IOH to 1.2, but you can leave them as auto for such a small OC.

Comps

P.S a bit OT here, your machine would really benefit from a better GPU as well.

I have tried your suggestions and all OC's failed. I reset my BIOS and im at almost factory defaults for everything other then boot priority and such. I still need help.

Ok,

I had this problem as well, when you save your settings, your computer shuts down, and then starts up again.

This isn't the OC failing. Reboot a second time, it'll boot up and then run Intel burn test whilst monitoring your temps using coretemp.

it actuatlly says OC failed.

Give it a reboot and see if the settings are still in there. If they are boot into windows and then load up CPU-Z.

I ran memtest 86 4.10 for 13 hours have 10 passes with 0 errors... I need to look at other things at this point then get back to OC'ing.

after looking at your list of components... i'm practically building the same thing - so this post would help me as well. thanks !

Hey I have pretty close to the same build as yours. This thing has been a piece of cake to overclock so far. This is my first time overclocking and I did alot of reading here http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...-e-thread.html and here http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...920-930-a.html before I got started.

I'm currently running at 3.8 with hyperthreading on.

I'm not done tweakin on it yet. I'm pretty sure I could take a tiny bit off the volts, but when I have a day to mess with it I'll probabaly just ditch the LLC instead and go from there.

Where I'm sittin now.
