Am I being lied to?

Thread Starter
So I have cable now days.. and I was recently asked by my company when I called if I would like to upgrade service for 10$ a month to 16 mbps from 8..

Well here it is a month later and I'm still not receivng anything closer to 16 than 8.. I rarely go over 8 when I speed test.. and lately my internet has been dropping out for no apparent reason.

I called the company last night and they said that my router has infact been provisioned for 16 mbps.. and this is the part where I get angry

The guys said maybe the problem is my network is unsecure and something is wrong with my router.. then asked if I plugged into the modem via ethernet.. I told him I have the same problems whether I'm connecting wirelessly to my router, through ethernet to my router or through ethernet straight to my modem.... He said it sounds like a problem with my router! They want to send a technician out.. however, honestly.. I for some reason doubt a technician is going to fix the problem.. and I really don't have time for a technician because I don't even know what my schedule is next week and my girlfriend usually works till 4..

I'm no expert on network security but, I do know that no one is going to just guess me password or tamper with my router in my area.. (Hell 90% of the people around here think you plug everything into your computer harddrive!!!!! X.x)

I really don't have time for a technician especially if this is going to be like the at&t technician where they will fix something and then it works fine till 2 hours after they leave..

I really don't have time for them to come out.. and the internet be working fine while they are here.. so they tell me "nothing we can do if it isn't giving problems right now"... I have a feeling that is what is going to happen.. while they are here.. I won't have any connection issues at all.. they will say there is nothing more they can do and leave.. and less than an hour later.. I'll lose connection again..

You guys think there is any chance tech support just flat out lied to me last night and just said there was nothing wrong with my router? I don't know what reason they would have to lie but, either way I'm highly suspicious especially because he completely ignored me despite me telling him I plugged it into the modem....

A friend has a similar problem, low speeds even with computer plugged into the modem.Called Comcast, they sent a guy who replaced the modem and all was good.
I guess you can just ask them to replace yours too.

I had this problem a while back, the cable that was plugged into my modem had a weak signal and was causing me to not get speeds anywhere near what I was supposed to get. From my experience though, the company should be able to tell you if the signal is too weak.

Modem could also be bad and causing some issues. Either way, the only way to find out is to have someone come and take a look.
Definitely call them. like they said, modems go bad all the time and sometimes they just screw up in getting the signal to your house. You should be getting way more, this is what i get running through my modem and then two routers off my basic cable internet.

If you have your wireless signal encrypted, nobody else should be using your internet except for those who know the password... and those who are very good with Linux. So we can rule that one out.

Next, if you get the same speeds when plugged in directly into the modem as over the router, then we can obviously rule out the router as the problem.

It comes down to either your cable modem isn't properly configured, or its just the quality and/or traffic on your line: 99.9% of people don't get a direct line to their ISP, you usually share a line with your apt complex or neighborhood. Also, if you live a long way away from your ISP and have old wiring in the house/room, that can cause throtteling and dropped packets.

Lastly, are you talking about Mega BITS per Second or Mega BYTES per Second?

Yeah, I upgraded when I moved in from 1Mbps (basic plan) to 12Mbps and the dude hooked me up I think, cuz I get a lot higher. It only takes the 30 seconds and a flip of a switch on their end to provide you with that extra 8Mbps and you should have definitely seen results, If I were you, I would call them up and ask for them to double check their systems, and if it's not fixed have them come out there or replace your modem. Also, ask for a refund of that $10 dollars to be put towards your account since you weren't getting what you paid for.

They are just saying that you "could" get 16. That's if everything is right and no one else is using it. There are no promises and you really can't do anything about it.
