Jesus Christ I hate these threads when someone starts posting there own speed and has nothing to do with the thread or solving OP's question.

haha not always true. i have knology, they are a big company in north florida. they can check most of that stuff remotely from where they work. it's actually quite creepy. i called them up once and they did a diagnostic test and sent a tech guy to come by and fix the problem. (needed new modem) they also knew what router i had hooked to my modem. that's disturbing that they can access all that information.

Routers can get iffy, i just replaced mine with a gigabyte router. Seems a lot faster now. I am happy.

If it is free, have them come out there. They sometimes know their stuff.
EG) my house is wired through a control box and it was super hard for me to figure out how the networking went on the control panel the tech guy came out and set all that stuff up and got the phone lines and internet all setup.

It was nice since i was completely clueless.

I know with Cox Communications here in my state they say i can get up to 16megabits, but in reality i only get around 10-8. If after the tech guy trys to figure it out and doesn't. File a complaint with them and they don't want to resolve, threaten to cancel with them. They will usually give you some type of discount or something.

Make sure you're not getting MegaBytes and MegaBits confused.

Mb/s = Mega bits per second.
MB/s = Mega bytes per second.

1Mbps = 125kbps.

16Mbps = 2MB/s download speed.

Other than that, not all moderns are compatibly with an ISPs network. I know Charter Communication requires specific modems to get rated speeds. I found that out the hard way when I switched from a generic modem to a DLink.

There should be a compatibility list on their website.

Also keep in mind the location from the nearest terminal, network activity, and other parasitic activity that can cause latency. You probably won't sustain those speeds but you should be seeing those speeds at times.

***** @ People posting their network speeds. Its like a penis swinging contest.

Well here it is a month later and I'm still not receivng anything closer to 16 than 8.. I rarely go over 8 when I speed test.. and lately my internet has been dropping out for no apparent reason.

I called the company last night and they said that my router has infact been provisioned for 16 mbps.. and this is the part where I get angry

The guys said maybe the problem is my network is unsecure and something is wrong with my router.. then asked if I plugged into the modem via ethernet.. I told him I have the same problems whether I'm connecting wirelessly to my router, through ethernet to my router or through ethernet straight to my modem.... He said it sounds like a problem with my router! They want to send a technician out.. however, honestly.. I for some reason doubt a technician is going to fix the problem.. and I really don't have time for a technician because I don't even know what my schedule is next week and my girlfriend usually works till 4..

I'm no expert on network security but, I do know that no one is going to just guess me password or tamper with my router in my area.. (Hell 90% of the people around here think you plug everything into your computer harddrive!!!!! X.x)

I really don't have time for a technician especially if this is going to be like the at&t technician where they will fix something and then it works fine till 2 hours after they leave..

I really don't have time for them to come out.. and the internet be working fine while they are here.. so they tell me "nothing we can do if it isn't giving problems right now"... I have a feeling that is what is going to happen.. while they are here.. I won't have any connection issues at all.. they will say there is nothing more they can do and leave.. and less than an hour later.. I'll lose connection again..

You guys think there is any chance tech support just flat out lied to me last night and just said there was nothing wrong with my router? I don't know what reason they would have to lie but, either way I'm highly suspicious especially because he completely ignored me despite me telling him I plugged it into the modem....
Directly connect to your modem - if you get 8Mbps, your getting 8Mbps. If you get 16Mbps, your getting 16Mbps.

I doubt its a signal issue, because if it was you would be getting random speeds and not 8Mbps constant.

Your ISP is either... A: Lying to you, or B: your modem is hard capped at 8Mbps and they need to come out and manually set it.

Either way, if they don't know that then they are incompetent. I would go with a different ISP at this point.
