Thread Starter
My current CPU is on my sig, I have been told to upgrade my CPU/MOBO and memory instead of my video cards for now. What do you guys recomend 4 core or 6 core? On a side note how much i could I sell my current CPU/Mobo/Ram for? I will also be switching to Windows 7.Appart from gaming only at 1920x1080 and internet I really dont to much else on my PC.

As you are here I assume you are looking for an AMD cpu?

If not I would suggest the i7 860

If yes, than really going for a 6 core won't give you much benefit right now in gaming. Game developers have barely started optimizing for quad-core CPU's.

I am skipping these first 6 cores and saving up to get a Bulldozer-cpu. It's just another 6-8 months away!!

believe it or not you will actually benefit more in games by upgrading your gpu's instead of your cpu, mobo, and ram

Not really. Athlon x2 is pretty outdated. The 8800gt's still hold their own pretty well, especially in SLI.

To OP: Since you won't be doing much other than gaming and internet, stick with a quad core. 6 core is more helpful in rendering and other things that need the extra cores.

AMD's newer processors should also work on AM3 motherboards, so this will leave you room to upgrade if you wish to do so.

As for selling your old cpu, mobo, and ram, I'd say about $120-$140.

In your case, the best gaming combo is to get an i5 750 with a p55 board. That will give you a substantial increase in performance. If you go amd, get a 955 along with one of the nvidia am3 boards.

Or one with a Lucid Hydra chip.

I think a 6400+ 3500MHz is pretty good for gaming, an 8800GT is who makes a bottleneck in games, not that processor at that frequency.

For upgrade the system for best performance in gaming, my opinion is an i5 750 and a new graphic card, not Sli with another 8800GT...
