Not all cards are the same, especially if his fans arent working right. Forgot to mention that the new bios will also help your fan problem probably.

If i were you -

1. uninstall drivers/ccc

2. flash new bios that allows fan and voltage control

3. install drivers

4. disable ulps

5. overclock with afterburner to 730/1000 on stock voltage (it only requires a little overclock to get the 2d clocks up) and make sure both clocks on windows desktop are at 400mhz

If that is all correctly done and it still crashes in 2d applications then I would look into other options.

Everyone is so quick to dismiss cards as the cards fault but I'm a firm believer that 70% of cases where people believe it was the cards fault actually are most likely not. I would want to try as much as possible before thinking about RMA.

Edit: Found the BIOS on XFX, they wan't me to "Please format your pen drive using the available USB FORMAT tool. Then copy all these files to the pen drive boot the system." (source: read me)

I have no usb stick atm, I guess that is a pen drive.

Can I use a CD instead? Will a BIOS update void the warranty of my 5970?

Dude, I know you're new to this but you need to search, I've given as much help as I can but you aren't meeting us half way. Take a day and do some research.

no dont use a CD for anything bios related . go spend a few bucks on a usb drive , and format it with the usb format tool , follow the directions on XFX website ( if needed print them so you can follow each step) then once the bois is flashed download the overvolt tool to adjust your fan / voltage speeds , after you have done these steps and you made sure every step discussed in this thread was followed and tried in Windows 7 then you should be error free and have fan control as well.

is this problem related to the infamous gsod? It seems to me these 2d crashing problems only occure to 5870s or 5970s that are manufactured recently. Are the manufacturers cheaping out on parts when building the GPUs?

My pair of 5870s are from the first batch received at NCIX. I have been using them for about a year now and so far they can do aero in windows 7 at 157/300mhz without any crashes and I can overclock them all the way to 900/1300mhz in 3D mode at stock voltage without artifacts...
