Q9550 lapping - Page 2

I'm gonna be honest, yes, its nice to get the nice mirror shine, but not needed. I'd just check your temps and see if you have an improvement, besides, once you've got your HSF on there you're really gonna see it.

got me cpu done, my temps have dropped 3 degrees taking into account what metalicamaster3 said regarding stuck sensors (btw they are not always locked to 34 degrees, they go higher, jus t no lower than 34, is this still the case)

still cant get the thing completely done though, around the edges its still a little scuffy, the soap and water job did the trick, however it must have taken me 4-5 hours of just sitting there and very quickly going back and forth with the cpu and adding the tiniest amount of soap and water when needed pics are attached anyway, get this though, i was slowly gettin more and more sozzled whilst doing this and i accidently sprayed a very small amount of carling over the pins on the cpu as well as me Pentium D 915 as they were sittting next to each other, but i cleaned it off, its ok.....then i put back in my pc and it was fine, i banged on a game of crysis and 10 mins in BSOD, but not because of CPU because my new GTX 285 had frikin died!!!!! im writing this now on my gtx but in safe mode and the display is frikin messed up badly pictures attached) so after the third time of lapping the cpu and all the time spent my frikin card dies, i got it for £97 as well, wont be able to afford a new card for ages now!!!!!!!!!!!!

..you can see what i mean about the edges having a little scuffy appearance.... annoying, so i guessed, hmm, maybe just keep going with water and soap and it will eventuaklly go, but iwas already f#lapping for frikin 4-5 hours, how mu8ch frikin more does it need, jesus christ.!!!

That turned out perfect as far as I'm concerned for a mirror finish. (A lot better than mine, but it's doing it's job regardless)

Sorry to hear about the GPU though.

You have to upload the pics to a site like tinypic or photobucket and use the [img] [/img] tags to embed the pic.

That's some pretty damned good results! Honestly I'd stop it there, do the razor test (put a razor on top and see if it's completely flat) and call it a day. That's a fantastic mirror finish, you did a good job.

And yes, the stuck sensors will go higher, but not lower.

The flatness is the MOST important thing about lapping. Getting the mirror finish should be secondary to that, and is just removing all surface imperfections, but only after the surface is flat. Looks like your corners are beveled which is why they aren't as smooth as the middle.

You need to get a razor to see if your surface is flat. It may be concave if you rocked too much.

Also your heatsink block needs to be lapped now to get the best benefit.

The purpose of this is to have the heatsink and CPU perfectly flat (maximizes contact area without paste having to fill in voids). The polishing further removes the microscopic voids on the finish of the metal, but first and foremost you need 2 perfectly flat surfaces. As a result you'll only need a minimal amount of paste.
