Going to buy a new GPU, 5850 or GTX 470.

I'm having a hard time making my mind up, right now I'm slightly leaning towards the 5850, any non bias advice?

I just moved from gtx 470 to 5850. The gtx 470 is slightly faster then the 5850 and does tessellation better. 5850 is cheaper you can get an open box asus directcu for 240 which overclocks like a beast.

Its kind of hard to tell you which is best though they both have their ups and down. If I am in your position though, I would look on newegg open box and get me an asus direct cu then later get another one. But I perfer less heat and less power consumption. if this isn't an issue for you go for a gtx 470.

You'll be happy with either. 5850 overclocks to 5870 fairly easily and from what I understand the 470 will OC to a 480 easily as well if you can keep it cool. I say the 5850 is the price/performance buy right now so I'd lean towards it a little but if you can find a 470 for 300ish you can't go wrong.

I own two of each of these cards right now, so, my experience is pretty much all dual-gpu based, but ... my observations:

DX9 and DX10 they're pretty close to even in perf, except for some reason in Far Cry 2 (like anyone cares ).

In DX11 the 470 pretty much smokes the 5850. Especially in Metro and Call of Pripyat.

Min FPS tends to be higher on the 470's and they handle higher levels of AA better. They do run hotter and louder though, and use more power. 470's also support phys-x and 3d vision (need a 120Hz monitor though), and 5850's allow for eye-finity.

They're both priced pretty well for how they perform, so ... can't go wrong with either one really.

I think it boils down to if you care about DX11 performance, energy consumption, or heat production.

Do you like to fold?
If yes, get the 470GTX for sure. ATI support is yet to be announced.

If not, either one is good. It just comes down which side you prefer. Red or Green
