We will see.
I say it's a combination of these two factors. I've seen someone attach a small fan to the base of the 355 to alleviate some of the heat (it was on a UN mount). Even a 655 needs some air flow to cool it off.

i had the pad stuck to the bottom of the pump to make it stick so it wont move. i touched the pump and its getting warmer on the run, i wouldnt think its a prblem. last night it started to smoke. i opened the side panel two weeks ago, no air on that part.

That "cap" is probably the Bitspower Anti-cyclone fitting. It has 3 outlets on the inner "side."

Just FYI.

That's still way to restrictive for my taste.

imo, that probably helped a bit.

Sad to see that happen to you , but hopefully the MCP655 will do good for you.

Love mine with the Bitspower top.

Can you take the pump apart and take pictures of where the heat/burning was coming from ?

Here is a Bitspower Anti-cyclone fitting, looks restrictive, but not enough to cause this IMO.
I would be much happier if it had 6 holes in it.

That looks like it was the control for the pump itself. The motor used in them(so that the coolant stays separate from the power) is a 3 phase DC controller. Looks like it overheated from not having enough airflow. I've seen the same thing on RC 3 phase DC speed controls. The only solution I can see would be to mount it up a little higher and make sure to have some airflow around it. The part that actually burned are the FETs that are used to control the power pulses to the motor windings(you can see it in when looking at the first and second pictures.
