I think most people who hates halo either a) only played some matchmaking, which isn't a particularly outstanding part of the game; or b) is jumping on the 'it's popular so I should hate it' bandwagon.
And then saying Gears of War is a good game - it was mediocre at best.
This. I didn't think Halo 3 was great when compared to the other games in the series, and I don't even own it (and I game almost exclusively on my 360), but it is not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. It's not particularly new or innovative, but it has the competitive FPS multiplayer style down to a science. It's still a fantastic game for LAN parties, just as much as Halo was back in 2001 and Halo 2 was in 2004. Halo's popular for a reason. What it does, it does very, very, very well.
And I did not like Gears of War. It was boring, both in gameplay and in visuals.
