Is the phenom X6 good for CAD programs?

Thread Starter
Hey guys so im revamping my girlfriends computer from scratch, I saw in the frys ad tonight that they had a phenom II x6 + gigabyte ga880gm-ud2h for $214. She likes my i7 920 but i feel that putting her on a x58 platform might be a bit expensive for my budget, Its not going to be used for any gaming and is going to have a Quadro card in it. I dont know anything about amd cpu's so how would this perform against a quadcore i5 around that same price range? And from what i remember the extra cores would help her with programs?

Thanks guys!

Also im open to suggestions for other cpu's + mobos around $100 -200 range

ya for that price range i would say definetly get the x6 1055t

i am very happy with it and if she needs more power just overclock it

stock is 2800 mhz and i run mine at 3510 mhz with stock Vcore 1.344v, u can get 4000 if u got a good cooler but imo just use stock cooler and leave it on stock vcore at 3400-3500 mhz

imo amd x6 > i5
of course i7 beats it but it cost way more anyway

A bit over generalized.

But the performance depends on whether or not the software takes advantage of 6 cores, and thankfully most CAD software do.

Newegg has it for $199 + 15 dollar gift card

*Edit- Oh the 214 is for mobo + CPU. Yeah thats a great price. I'm not too excited about the motherboard they are giving you... but its still decent. Since you wont be gaming on it, its actually perfect. Take the deal!

Ah okay, i think shes using autocad 2010, and .. uhh.. something else >_< but ya i think i read it takes advantage of multi core. Hmm.. Well for mobo im limited to micro ATX , she bought herself basically the most girly case possible (Inwin allure) and it only accepts micro atx. =[ I have the print outs of the ad's so home they honor them, Thanks man +rep

More cores does = better performance but you do have to realize that, "not all cores are equal" which is why the i7s beat the 6 cores despite having only 4 physical cores. It would be true if AMD's physical cores were equal to intel's cores(without HT o/c).

And again I am not a fanboy of either just shinning more light on "more physical cores=better"-yes I added the 'physical'
