They work quite well, not all; but you could say enough. Cleaning once a month/or two when lazy tiem.

Depends on how thick they are and how tight the weave.
Weave tightness on them is measured in Denier, the higher the number, the tighter the weave.
10 denier will not stop all dust, but will be almost invisible to the eye and the fan when stretched.
80 denier will make the fan strain a lot but will catch everything. 20-30 is probably the best number to go for.
