Which RAID Card?

Thread Starter
I decided to buy a raid card. I will get 4 Samsung F1 1TB hard drives and RAID them in RAID 10. My budget is flexible but hoping to stay under $200.

Have you looked into a Dell Perc 5i/6i? They can usually be found at a great price.

Here is a Perc 6i for $190:

Will they fit into one PCI-E slot? They seem to be rather bulky and need extra work.

Probably a Dell PERC5/6 if you can get it... but it may need to be flashed to get working with your system.

I have experience with the Adaptec 2405 kit, just so long as you have absolutely no intention of going to RAID5 or RAID6 in the future

The Adaptec 2405 seems to be a high recommended card over at WHT. Hows the performance vs the PERC 5/i? Also, does it need its own fan like the PERC.

The Perc 5i/6i are PCI-E x4 cards. Note I edited my previous post.

They have heatsinks, but you can mod a fan if you wanted to. I didn't need one on my Perc 6i card though. The real difference between the 5i and 6i is that the 6i has the ram integrated on the PCB while the 5i has dimm slots to install ecc ram. If you buy a 5i, it should include the ram, otherwise you will have to buy ecc modules.

They are designed for a Dell server case which provides decent airflow. if you have good airflow you wont need a fan.

I see. Hows the performance of the 6i vs the 5i vs the 2405? Would this work with the AMD 890fx chipset?

I expect the Adaptec 2405 to require less effort to get working with whitebox systems...

The 2405 comes with a stock heatsink, and it seems to be sufficient, in my experience, although the server of mine that it is installed in comes with a 80mm side fan that sucks cool air in the front and blows over the cards...

Performance between all the cards in RAID-10 with 4 drives is probably all very close to each other. It's not like you're running RAID-5 or RAID-6 (or other variants) that require parity calculations. I highly doubt that anybody here can give you definitive, quantitative differences between the three cards... I have the 2405 with 4x320GB WD RE-1 drives in RAID-10, and also the PERC6/i with 8x160GB RE3 HDDs in RAID-10, but the host systems are vastly different.

I do know that the 2405 RAID-10 array feels faster than the RAID-0 array (2x WD Black 640GB) in my workstation, connected using a Dell SAS6iR controller chip...Though in real-world read & write tests, in large file transfers between the 2405 host system and the SAS6iR host system, I max out my gigabit connection at about 980mbits/sec - on both read & write operations....
