whats up OCN. i just got a job and wanna treat myself to some decent audio stuff. and since i am by no means an audiophile i figured id ask you all for help.

i'm probably buying a xonar d1 or dx next week and just ordered the rx-900's, so i figured why not upgrade the speakers too!
Oh! and this guy inspired me a little to
http://www.overclock.net/sound-cards...2-1-setup.html

moving on... this will be for music and gaming only, and will never become a 5.1. so i wanna know if ill be better of with a good 2.1 pre packaged speaker system of a custom one.

my first problem is my budget. i dont want to spend alot on a pre-p system so 150 MAYBE 200, and 300 for the custom one, maybe to 350 if need be. this is all going on my desk with the sub on the floor in the corner. i was looking at these two

and need help with the receiver or amp, or everything if you can do better.
all help is appreciated

So that's $300 for speakers, sub, and amp/receiver? If that's the case, I'd skip the sub completely and put that money towards speakers. I'd also try to find some old stereo or anything that can power the speakers and invest more money in speakers. Other than that, I've seen people suggest a small amp but can't remember the name of it.

Considering you are already spending $210 for the speakers/sub, plus ~$30 for speaker wire & rca cables, he is down to $110 for the receiver. This is assuming he is even willing to go for his maximum budget ($350).

$110 for a new amp or receiver is impossible.

His options are craigslist for a receiver from the mid/late 90s, or rob a convenience store for cash I would say.

and also... i love bass so i do wanna sub. and i was looking at the monitor 40's but there a little to big for my desk i would think

i was reading on the polk forums that the 30s are less bassy versions of the 40s so a sub is needed with them.

350 for the main components. my uncle has a spool of 16 gauge wire. will that be good enough to connect the speakers to the amp?

...that subwoofer cannot power speakers. The only subs that have that ability are ones sold in integrated systems. Stand-alone subs are not designed for that ability, because frankly it's a waste of space.
