Kinda surprised to see that it's actually slower that the 860 in one of the benches, even if it's clock speed is slower. Everest has it only as quick as an i5 - that's disappointing too!

Regard AVX - I'm sure that will kick ass, but don't the apps and everything have to be recompiled to use it first? Simply having it doesn't make a chip faster (Pentium vs. Pentium MMX, back in the day!)

Yup. The sandy bridge die shrink will probably be out by the time it sees widespread usage.

Yes, it took them 2 years to merely match the Nehalem quad in rendering with six cores. They're still behind in memory, per clock, and gaming.

Bulldozer is rumored to be slower than Phenom 2 in single threaded applications.

AMD's best fighting chance is in multithreading were they can chunk many small cores to handle tasks. Intel is just too far ahead in terms of single thread clock performance.

The one tested has 6MB L3 cache and operate only at 2.5GHz. Yet it outperformed i7 965 in some of the tests. i7 965 has %28 higher clock speed and 8MB L3 cache

The final sandy-bridge is going to have 8MB L3 and much higher clock speed than the one tested.

Intel is ahead mostly because they've been using four issue cores since Core 2.

Bulldozer also looks like it will be a four issue core, and unless they do something horribly wrong, it should be noticeably faster clock for clock, core for core, than Phenom II.

Socket 2011 seems like it will be replacing 1567, which has been out a while.

1356 should be the 1366 replacement.

This is an important point - Core 2 really left the CPU world as we knew it, for dead. Even if Core 2 had only been a single-core package, it would have been super-quick compared to Netburst (even with it's higher clock speed) and the Athlon incarnation at the time. The leap from Netburst to Core 2 was massive, far bigger than the Core 2 -> Nehalem leap (which was much more of an upgrade or progression, rather than an innovation)

When AMD launched Phenom and Phenom II, they really dropped the ball by not chasing the Core 2 philosophy - if Bulldozer is going for it, then the CPU world could be genuinely exciting again. AMD chips won't be the 'cheaper' brand, sacrificing performance for cost. It'll drive costs down or standards performance up, in the pursuit of value - brilliant for consumers
