Actually.. You should ditch the i7 and get a Phenom 1055T as every rendering benchmark shows that the Phenom is a little faster than the i7 and is about $80 cheaper.

So you wouldn't need the extra cash for the Video - though i would recommend a Geforce or Good Ati with a weak GeForce for PhysX cause recently there was a release plug-in that allows the use of PhysX in 3Dmax. And consider a faster HDD for 3Dmax to turn to - i mead something like 1 SSD for OS + 2 raptors of 150GB for batch files and page files + 1TB for storage.

P.S. I7 is a good choice in the CPU - it is far better for Rendering though with 4 cores Max uses the threads which in this case are 8 and is more faster than the 6 core AMD in MAX particularly.

Sounds like a good option but unfortunately the retailer that I am going to purchase all my parts from do not stock the 1055T.

That's a new feature in the 2011 Max but there is one big BUT - it's new and for it there are no matterials and etc. addons for high quality rendering, you will have to build everything from scratch.

Ok guys just bit the bullet and bought the machine.

Here's what I changed

UD7 to UD3R- I did some more research and the UD7 was just overkill for my requirements. Saved around $200- thanks guys.

Fatal1ty pro to Asus Xonar Essence STX - Best quality, Asus support for only $20 more.

Vertex II SSD 50GB to Vertex II SSD 60GB- 10GB extra of SSD space for an extra $20- makes sense.

Also bought a XP-Pen XP-8060B 8x6 Tablet w Wireless Mouse as I always wanted a tablet and I needed a new mouse so this kills two birds with one stones.

Again thanks to everyone for your helpful advice! Now time to string this machine together

As the title states the main purpose for this machine will be 3D modelling e.g Autodesk Maya, 3dsmax, Revit, Sketchup e.t.c. I will also use it for quite a bit of 2D work so basically all the Adobe creative suite programs. I only really play old-school strategy games hence my choice of the GTX470 (I would go ATI but their cards have compatibility issues with the 3D programs that I need to use)

So what do you guys think? Are their any floors in my spec list?

From seeing everything stated in here, I would definately go more cores as rendering time will be reduced dramatically. Also, I say keep the 470. That thing, if a program has a plugin for the GPU, would rip anything you through at it to shreds.

Also I would go with more ram and a bigger SSD (although do you REALLY need an SSD)?

IMO, I would rather have maybe 2-3 hard drives (2-3TB) for strage and whatnot. Also, after seeing my brother work on CAD on his macbook pro (windows installed and it has 4GB of ram) I was shocked at how intensive it is ram wise. It just sucked his mac dry.
