[TheAge]Mysterious 30 metre sinkhole-cause? Unkown - Page 5

Another fictional explanation could be that our reality is falling apart.

But it looks way to engineered to me than it could have happened by natural causes. Alone the almost perfect cycle, and the pretty much even walls. Maybe an earth drill. Or something with high sonic frequencies that can do something like that to soil.

Clue: i don't see any broken water or sewer lines.

I thing this need further investigations, soil sample analysis, radioactive tracing. And finally someone should go down there and take some pictures.

I wish i could could fly there myself and see whats down there.

Broken sewage ducts ate away at the earth until the ground above caved in...

Wonder how much sand maybe required to fill that hole.
Well, if you assume the hole is a perfect cylinder of 30m deep and 20m wide, it would be 9425m^3 (or 332,833ft^3). That would be 33,200,000lbs of dry sand .

How so? Volume of a cylinder is pi*h*r^2. So pi*30m*(10m)^2=9425m^3. Dry sand has a density of about 1.6g/cm^3 (taken from Wolfram|Alpha). And 9425m^3 * 1.6g/cm^3 = 33,200,000. Really, since the sand would be packed, it would be a lot more.

Like you said, the sand would be packed so 2.0-2.3 is a much better number. Also, the sinkhole is much deeper than 30m. National geographic has it at 30m x 100m.

I've got 148.5 million kg of sand to fill this. Damn.

They need to fill it, too. Otherwise the ground will begin to subside and engulf nearby buildings . Wonder what kind of madman would build something over top of a 100m column of manmade packed sand though.

Edit: 148,499 tons of sand to fill. $10 per ton in the states. So let's say $2 in guatemala. $300,000 to fill!
