New to AMD . AMD FX or AMD X2 dual core?

Thread Starter
I am switching over to AMD from an Intel 3.4ghz P4 Northwood. A couple questions I have are:

Which is a better chip the FX or the X2 dual core chips? Im assuming the FX, price isnt too much of an issue.

How do you relate the AMD chips to the Intel chips as far as speed? By that I mean, I know intel goes by ghz. Everybody says they have a 3.4ghz cpu and it gives you a good idea of the speed. AMD's ghz rating are a linear relation to intel's correct? How do you compare the two, its like comparing apples to banannas.

Can you use the arctic silver 5 for the amd chips as well? I had used that on my P4 for the thermal compound.

Thanks!

The x2 cips will do the better job, but the fx57 is the flagship of amd
your cpu is 3.4ghz which is 3400mhz this would be equal to a 3400+ which runs at 2.2ghz

If you want a rough conversion, just multiply an AMD processor speed by 1.5X because of the differences in instructions executed per clock cycle. (9 vs 6 or 9/6=1.5) There are also other differences, but that is a rough conversion. AMD also has AMD3DNow! which helps in all 3D applications. You'll also notice less L2 cache, but remember that AMD uses less latency cache than Intel does, so it can get away with less.

if cost isn't an issue, why not both? the FX-60 is a duel core

Thanks all! Is it only the FX-60 that is dual core?

I am seeing a lot of FX-53 , FX - 55 and FX - 57 cpu's out there. Any recommendations there?

Can you use arctic silver 5 on these for the thermal compound just as the intel chips?

i'd get a dual core CPU for sure. it's the new wave of technology that will be used more and more as time goes on. You'd kinda be shooting your self in the foot to buy a single core now. If money is no issue, go for hte FX-60. or you could always get the X2 4800+ for a bit less (you can always OC the 4800+ to FX-60 speeds, )

oh, and for clarification, the FX-60 is the only dual core FX processor. avoid the FX-53 and 55... you may as well buy an AMD 4000+ and save a crap load of cash.

and yes, you can use AS5 on AMD processors...

Thanks! So the FX-60 is the only one of the FX line that is dual core? So its either that or the X2-4800?

Yeah, but if money isn't an issue, get the FX-60. It's speeds are higher than the 4800, and if you wanted to, you could overclock it to even HIGHER speeds!

yes, you can use arctic silver 5!

if you want single core the FX57 is the fastest cpu AMD makes and is clocked at 2.8
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103558
the best bang for the buck is the 3700+ SD as 2.8 is almost guaranteed and 3.0Ghz on air is not unattainable.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103539

dual core the FX60 takes the lead at 2.6
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103608

If money really isn't an object I'd probably go w/ a high end dual core and oc it. the fx60 should be good to get to 2.8 which would make it just as fast as the 57 on single threaded applications and much better at multitasking.

another thing you may want to consider is looking at some Opterons. AMD makes both single and dual core opteron counterparts that are basically the same as the regular A64's except they are meant for server platforms which mean they are tested more and many times will OC better. the opteron counterpart to the fx57 is the 154 and the best opty dual core is the 180 which operats at 2.4Ghz
