CPU Frequencys Constantly Changing

Thread Starter
For some reason CoreTemp shows my CPU frequency as 133.23 x 20.0 (normal)

but while folding all 8 threads @ 100% its jumping between its normal clocks and 133.23 x 19.0 (changes between these two every 3-4 seconds)

Probably being paranoid, but any reason why thats happening?
Any way to stop it?

Thanks

I think it is turbo boost, when not all cores are being used (idle) core 0/1 can go 20x

But I am not sure :/

133.23x20 is my i7's stock clocks, and since the cpu is running at 100% it shouldnt be changing the clocks.

Turned the CPU client off for the moment, and its sitting at 133.23 x 12.0 and not flickering

Dont i7 have some sort of boost thingy? thats probs whats making the clock go up and do,just changes the multiplier.
Was watching my mates cpu do this last night in cpu-z and explaining to him why it does it.
If your not using your cpu it lowers the multiplier to slow itslef down, think its called speedstep maybe? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpeedStep

Yes I understand speedstep, but I was certain that during a cpu intensive program (all 8 threads at 100%) it wouldnt step down.

Ok fair point, maybe it shouldnt be doing that if the cpu is balls to the wall,no.

exactly, wondering why its jumping down from 2.7ghz to 2.5ghz, thought the CPU would realise extra power could come in handy

It might be a slight bug with CoreTemp. When i'm using Coretemp i've seen quite a few different frequencies quoted, it even told me I was running at like 4Ghz once which I can assure you I was not lol

^^ +1

I remember reading somewhere that i7's will throttle back the multiplier if the power draw exceeds a certain amount, but disabling some of the power saving features fixed that problem.
