Ok so I am in the process of doing a deal on ocn that will get me a evga gtx 285 FTW + a waterblock. But I wont be watercooling it for a bit. So aircooling atm.

Is the FTW version a custom pcb?
Does it have voltage control?

and

what software do I use to overclock it?

I am used to ati overclocking so, whats a good overclock for a 285 - like the equivalent of 1ghz?

also safe volts and temps for 24/7?

lots of questions I know but I am completely new to Nvidia Thanks

As far as i know GTX 285 FTW (EVGA) are produced with stock PCBS. They put more solid state capacitors (higher quality electronics overall) and come with a tweaked BIOS with higher volts.

My google search concluded that It is not possible to Soft Volt Mod a GTX 285. Hard Mods are still possible and produce amazing results. Specially on memory.

745 Core | 1681 Shaders | 2928 Memory (effective). <--- Amazing air overclock. OF course to get those clocks you'd need a factory volt moded (or a hardmoded) card.
Core Clock 648MHz
Shader Clock 1476MHz
Memory Clock 2484MHz
Are the standard clocks.

The common "everybody can hit" overclock is more like:
# Core Clock: 718MHz (vs. 648MHz standard)
# Shader Clock: 1575MHz (vs. 1476MHz standard)
# Memory Data Rate: 2686MHz (vs. 2484MHz standard)

This information might not be completely right as it comes from just searching on the net because i don't have a GTX 285. Good Luck.

by soft volt mod does that mean through software? - can you not flash it to a modded bios with higher clocks?

Thanks a lot

I believe the FTW comes 720 core at stock - not sure about the rest

I have an evga 285 ftw that I haven't modded at all, stock clocks are 702/1323/1584 same as the ssc model. Voltage can't be changed with software or bios flash.
Overclocks stable to about 750/1400/1700.

THere are 2 versions of 285 FTW, the first one came with 702 core clock, the second 720.

I ment software controlled voltage mod.

About BIOS, apparently you can't soft mod them trough the BIOS. To volt mod them you need to resort to THIS

Ok thanks, well would a pencil mod suffice?
