I know OCing EVGA motherboards have a third party IDE controller for this reason.

I just invested in an asus essence st...which uses a pci slot instead of pcie (which the stx uses). i wasn't really planning on replacing that card any time soon....meh. sucks.

In a way, I guess it's going to be a way to force manufacturers to stop pitzing around and finally enter the 21st Century. PCI-E can adjust its lanes to be allocated to where they are needed. It can be backwards compatible with 1.0 and 2.0 devices without slowing all the other lanes down (I remember PCI-X hell with the cards being rated for different speeds, and the bus lowering to the slowest card). Old fashioned PCI is just plain slow and inflexible. And manufacturers can always add PCI bridges if they wish.

I think we had this problem, too, with USB and Firewire taking over Parallel and Serial ports. I certainly don't miss them.

Those use a PCI slot, except they're hardwired.

Yeah, the high end ones.. a AU$50 one that does the job is nearly always going to be USB or PCI.

It doesn't really affect me, the only PCI stuff I have is a Wireless Network card that I can easily replace with a PCIe one (And I want to, I want Wireless N) but I can see why this pisses on some peoples chips, guess they'll have to go AMD next round.

I was kinda surprised when I saw that the PCIe ports were 2.0 and not 3.0, which were supposed to come out with Sandy Bridge if I recall correctly.

Anyway I don't care about this because I haven't used a PCI port since 2002 or so, as for sound and network I've been using the motherboard devices since my P4.

Mobo manufacturers will still put separate PCI controllers on their mobos. I'd be surprised if they didn't.
