Modem needs restart to run full speed

Hey guys,

I checked speedtest.net and saw that I have a god awful 408 ms ping, paired with a 0.42 megabit download.

***

I unplugged the DSL modem (SBC yahoo AT&T) manually and plugged it back in.

I ran speed test again, and got a 13ms ping with 1.35megabit download speed.

This is around the speed I used to get. I browsed the internet for a few minutes and wanted to make sure it was working again, and ran speedtest.net

0.25megabit download 300 ms ping. Ugh.

Is my DSL modem going bad? I never got speeds this low. I have a Netgear WRN2000 router which seems to be working properly. The DSL modem is about 1-2years old and always gets hot, but all the lights show that it is working properly. Does my ISP just suck? Its SBC yahoo at a Chicago server (Im about 30mi away).

Well any help greatly appreciated....

Have you tested connecting straight to the modem minus the router? This can give some insight as to whether it is the router or modem.

That could just a be a crappy routing issue on the ISP side....

If you go to:

http://www.giganews.com/performance.html

And run the Download speed test against news.giganews.com, what speeds do you get?

Something is wrong here. I don't even need to look at speedtest, webpages are taking as long to load up like when I was back on 56k.

And I can't play any multiplayer games because of insane lag.

Never got any of this before. Connection speed sucks on all my computers at my house, not just this one. Just did a clean install of Windows 7.

I will plug it straight into the modem, also, I will check that site out.

Ok Narrowed it down to the router.... plugged directly into the DSL modem and gamed fine, no lag, 17ms ping, 1.35megabit download SBC yahoo DSL for a while....

When plugged into WNR2000 netgear router though, speed gradually decreases to that of dialup...

Well, Im going to try to upgrade the firmware maybe that will help

I had the same problem. Using cable here. It seems to have fixed itself though.

UGh, I'm so effing angry.

I freaking unplugged and used a pin to restore WRN2000 router and DSL modem back to factory settings. Upgraded the firmware too.

I get a good speed immediately after I do this. But every second after, My ping gets HIGHER and D/L speed decreases, to about 800 ms PING, 0.24megabit download.

FAIL.

Well, everything is back to factory settings on both components, its the router not the DSL modem, so I'm **** out of luck. I paid 90$ for this P.O.S. too.

Wonder if theres any chance its just my stupid ISP and not my hardware....

Your router is dying, it's likely the onboard NIC. I had a similar problem with my custom untangle router and it turned out to be a bad NIC (Although, not a ping problem. Just connection drops.)

RMA it. It probably has a year or two manufactures warranty. Or if its within the 30 day return time (if the store you bought it from has that policy) return it there.
