No, he was saying that this chip is not $500 over a 980X. Looks like it's just clocked a little higher, not hard to do on your own. At least, that's how I took it.

People who can use 12 threads and don't like the idea of using server parts to make a 12 core AMD rig?

It won't cost over $1000, this is supposed to replace 980X

Yes, they are. Its a slightly higher clocked 980 and you have to pay a lot for it. I can understand benchers using this chip and the 980, but for someone who wants an Intel 6 core for normal use might as well get the 980.

Obviously if this replaces the 980 and drops to the same price its worth it.

1 It's overpriced, Intel hexacores in general are overpriced.

2 It's the same thing as a 980x with a slightly higher stock clock. Yay?

Come to think of it, the higher stock clock is great for people who don't overclock ... with a $1500 chip

Lads,

This is a niche market and people will buy it. INTEL wants to make money and will do what it has to in order to attain that goal. Understandable for some to recommend a 920/930 and overclock the beejesus out of it. If the world would work like this, we would not have luxury goods. Everyone would buy a honda civic and tune the crap out of it so it goes faster than a Zonda F and a Gallardo. When you buy a Zonda or a Gallardo you buy reputation, brand recognition, social standing, high quality parts, etc. This analogy can be extended to the extreme edition CPU. Buying one of these shows that you have the money to get the fastest and the best. In addition, these will always overclock better and with a higher probability of success than the normal 920/930. Sure the latter do have golden samples but those are so rare and the majority ends up with mediocre overclockers.

1) It's "overpriced" because there's nothing out there to compete with it.

2) It's most likely a higher binned chip.

Come to think of it, Overclocking is a niche and not everyone does it.
