It's like building a car that can do 8.45's in the quarter but would explode if you tried to go down to Burger King and clog up your arteries at three in the morning. Amusing to watch, takes a fair bit of skill to do, but in the end is utterly useless.

I get so tired of people that are convinced that value is the only factor that matters. If you don't have enough money for it, or can't justify it to yourself, fine, but don't keep spouting off that everyone who owns one is just after "e-peen" (as you so crudely put it). You don't know what you're talking about.

I guess all of the audiophiles with $500 headphones are just after growing their "peen" when they can buy headphones 90% as good for 1/5th of the price.

I guess all of the Ferrari owners are just after growing their "peen" when they can get a 370z that has 90% of the performance for 1/5th the cost.

I guess all of the baseball card collectors that own a Mickey Mantle rookie card in Mint condition are just after growing their "peen" when they could buy one with bent corners for 1/5th the price.

To some people "that last little bit" matters a great deal.

3.46GHz is looks better than 3.33Ghz, and Intel doesn't have to change a thing to put out chips at such a speed. Yields are obviously very good, and Intel could likely take the dies going into the 980X chips and give them a speed of 3.46, 3.53, 3.66, or even 3.73Ghz without issue.

It also opens up some room for lower priced six-core chips (which due to the die shrink aren't any more expensive to make than any of the Nehalem quads).

It would be in Intel's interest to get i7 970s and 980s out to fill that 500-800 dollar gap.
I am a bit confused as to how you arrived at those values:

166.6666666666666666 BClk and mulitpliers as follows:

166*20 = 3.333Ghz - OK
166*20.5 = 3.416Ghz - Not 3.46
166*21 = 3.499Ghz - Not 3.53
166*21.5 = 3.583Ghz - Not 3.53
166*22 = 3.666Ghz - OK
166*22.5 = 3.749Ghz - Not 3.73

[EDIT] - seems that since 21 is the next round mulitplier it makes sense to sell at 3.499 (market as 3.5Ghz) stock speed. [END EDIT]

However I do agree that keeping the 980X and bringing in the 970 in 500 - 800 price range is a good idea.

IGNORE THAT! just realised the bclk of the 980X is 133 as previously mentioned so your numbers add up! DOH!

Kinda like this kid that I helped at this computer building camp. He for some reason got a i7 980X for his gaming pc for his birthday. As if it wasn't stupid enough, he then gets an HD 5670 for the GPU. He would have gotten a 5770 if they would have had them at Microcenter. Epic fail. Why didn't he get at minimum a 5870 or 480? I have no idea.

Examples don't work in that situation. But your base card one does
