[TPU]Intel to Release Core i7 990X Extreme Edition Six-Core Processor in Q4 2010 - Page 5

Wow Intel is really milking the Extreme Edition CPU's. Since it's real value is around the price of an i7 920, they are making massive profit per sold chip. The 980x must have done really well

Why ? Any reason ?

I think this is supposed to replace 980X for the same price (like i7 965 > i7 975)

If you can't afford it, thats fine, go do something productive instead. Intel is doing what they've always done (and are good at): binning their best chips and selling 'em at 500% over cost. Those that want a real 6-core now have to pay the premium. If you can wait, the i7 970 comes out in Q3 so they're just around the corner.
There are different classes of overclockers. The goal of many overclockers is simply to get the most of the hardware they can afford, not just to have one of the fastest personal computers on Earth. When I started overclocking, I did it to save money, I would buy a CPU a few classes behind top-of-the-line, and then OC the crap out it. Usually saves quite a bit of money.

Pointless for most people. And those who it's not pointless to should be getting Xeon(s).

The i7 970 is good. I hope the price will be dropped when the Sandy Bridge is on sale.

I want a CPU that will clock like the 920 does and be 6 cores, and not cost $1000 dollars like the 980X.

I'm hoping for an Intel i7 (well, I don't know what to call it) They are almost done with the 900's and they wont use a smaller number. what will they do.

It's far from "out-dated". Just second-best.

I'd love to have enough dough for these Extreme chips on an SR-2....
Maybe in 20 years I'll get the then-equivalent
